While half the world is waiting for Nintendo to officially announce the Switch 2, the gaming company is coming up with another console.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it the long-awaited reveal of the Switch 2? No, it’s… a Game Boy! Yes, you read that right, Nintendo is releasing a new console this year that has not already been the subject of numerous leaks.

But how much Game Boy is in the Game Boy is still questionable: The most important components of this handheld are LEGO bricks.

This is what we know about the LEGO Game Boy

Information is scarce so far. The only solid facts are in the 15 seconds of the announcement video, which you can watch right below:

So, what we know: The release will take place in October this year.

What we don’t know, though, is: What the Game Boy looks like, how much it will cost and whether it will even work like a real Game Boy.

Not the first LEGO console

Nintendo has already worked with the building block company in the past to bring an old-school console back to life. The LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System was released in 2020, complete with a controller, game cartridge and a small TV.

Of course, real NES games didn’t run on it, and you won’t find any built-in electronics. Instead, the first level of Super Mario Bros. was manually playable – see for yourself:

So it’s quite likely that the LEGO Game Boy will also only offer a gimmick and not run real games. For the LEGO NES, you currently have to pay 270 euros, so the price of the Game Boy will probably be lower. At least the handheld console won’t need as many bricks.

If you’re looking for an absolute nostalgia trip, rest assured: there are several manufacturers who draw a lot of inspiration from old handhelds and release their own consoles. For example, the RG 34XX from Anbernic has obvious similarities to the Game Boy Advance.

The LEGO Game Boy is very likely not the only console from Nintendo to be released in 2025. The leaks are piling up, but the Mario company is still keeping a low profile. We have summarized what we can expect and which information appears trustworthy in the article above.
