No RX 8000? AMD’s new GPUs will probably be named differently and will be closer to Nvidia, of all companies

Instead of RX 8000, AMD is probably discarding the previous naming scheme and is approaching Nvidia, of all companies, with the new GPU names.

For months, rumors have been circulating about AMD’s upcoming graphics cards, which will probably be presented at CES 2025. So far, it was assumed that the company would retain the previous naming scheme and consequently that the “RX 8000” GPUs would be waiting for us.

Apparently AMD is now making a change This is reported at least consistently by several leakers and media:

  • In the Chiphell forum, which is intended for such advance information (via 9550pro), hints first appeared that the upcoming AMD GPUs should start “with a 9, 0 and 7 as the first three digits”.

  • Also, Videocardz explains, citing an unnamed board partner, that custom manufacturers are preparing for the release of “Nvidia] GeForce 50 and [AMD] Radeon 90”.

  • These preparations are also apparently underway at online retailers. According to the leaker momomo_us, the “RX 9070 (XT)” appeared briefly at the French shop Grosbill-Pro.

  • AMD itself has not commented on this so far. However, an official render of a yet unreleased graphics card has since emerged, which has been confirmed by several leakers as the “bestätigte RX 9070 XT”.

The reactions in the AMD subreddit are not overly happy about the reported name change; cynically, the company abbreviation is being renamed as “Another Marketing Disaster”.

The new naming scheme is not well received in the comments for one main reason: with a GPU called something like “RX 9070”, AMD is ultimately simply copying the names of Nvidia Geforce models.

The alignment of the GPU name with the current Ryzen CPUs – for example, a combination of Ryzen 7 9800X3D and Radeon RX 9070 XT – is viewed ambivalently in the Reddit comments.

At least for some people, the name doesn’t really matter as long as AMD’s new graphics cards offer a competitively priced alternative. Especially in the context of Intel’s convincing Battlemage debut, the Radeon GPUs now have to deliver.

New details about the technical specifications, a more precise release period and the US price have also been leaked in the wake of the name leak!

AMD last changed the naming scheme to the RX-5000 generation. The RX 5700 (XT), released in July 2019, also marked the switch to the still-valid RDNA architecture. After the Radeon graphics cards planned for 2025, there will be another change in architecture; instead of RDNA, graphics cards will run on UDNA.

    • The same is confirmed by AMD vice president Jack Huynh in an interview at IFA 2024. Structurally, a return to a similar scheme to GCN microarchitecture (“Graphics Core Next”) is planned.
    • The start of production of the first UDNA graphics cards is planned for the second quarter of 2026 and should also be relevant for upcoming Sony consoles such as the PlayStation 6.
