Nvidia’s RTX 5070 will probably only have 12 GB VRAM – Many consider this a mistake

Is the switch to GDDR7 enough for big performance jumps?

A few days ago, a graphics card leak caused an earthquake: the portal wccftech, citing internal sources, published all the relevant technical data of the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080.

The graphics cards are scheduled to be presented at CES 2025, where a keynote address by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is already firmly planned. Somewhat surprisingly, the RTX 5070 is also expected to make an appearance at the show. While no information was given about the chip here, according to the leak it is certain that the graphics card will rely on only 12 GB of video memory.

Compared to the RTX 4070, the pure amount of memory does not mean an upgrade – after all, it also had twelve GByte of VRAM when it was released about two years ago.

  • Only the memory type gets an upgrade. Instead of GDDR6X, GDDR7 is supposed to be available according to wccftech, which also has an influence on the memory speed and bandwidth.
  • The leak has now been confirmed by the usually well-informed kopite7kimi, at least with regard to the amount of memory in the RTX 5070.

The reactions are negative on the part of both the trade press and the community. The portal Overclock3D fears, for example, that “smaller RTX 50 GPUs could have even more memory restrictions” as a result.

At least: the entry-level and mid-range targeted by AMD and Intel for the next generation could benefit here and take advantage of the gap created by Nvidia. According to Overclock3D, however, this requires that the VRAM be generously dimensioned. A good price-performance ratio wouldn’t hurt either!

On Reddit, comments about the supposed memory of the RTX 5070 are also modest. Nvidia is being accused of a sales strategy here.

12 GB of video memory is not enough for today’s games, so high-end buyers have to buy the RTX 5080 – and if you’re already spending $1,500 on a GPU, you might as well buy the much more expensive and powerful RTX 5090. Incidentally, how much video memory is actually needed depends primarily on the resolution, as we already determined last year.

The wishes for the RTX 5070 in the Reddit comments can be summarized quite simply: Either a mid-range GPU from Nvidia should have 16 GB of VRAM – or it should cost less than $600. The predecessor was launched in the US at that price; in Germany, the card was priced at 659 euros when it was introduced.

Do you agree with the assessment that 12 GB of VRAM is not enough for the RTX 5070? Or could the Nvidia GPU at a low price point still be an attractive option – and if so, how low would it have to be? Let us know in the comments!
