Official remake of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion is reportedly in development

A new leak could indicate that a remake of Oblivion will be released by 2025. Confirmed is not the whole thing.

If this leak turns out to be true, the Skyblivion modding team will most likely bite the bullet. A leak from a former employee of the development studio Virtous Games, which was founded in China but now has branches all over the world, is currently circulating on the net.

In his leak on Reddit, the ex-employee talks about projects being developed at Virtous Games in Paris. A variety of project names were revealed here, including an official remake or remaster of Bethesda”s giant role-playing game The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion.

The post has since been deleted by the creator himself and the account no longer exists. However, a screenshot of the post has been preserved:

This is what the leak says

If the leak is to be believed, some small details about the new edition of Oblivion are already known. This is what the leaker claimed about the project:

  • The project listens to the working title Altar
  • It is not yet decided whether the team will develop a remake or just a remaster.
  • At the moment, new assets are being built in Unreal Engine 5 as well as reworking the basic framework in the old Gamebryo engine.
  • The game is scheduled to be released either towards the end of 2024 or early 2025. Depending on whether it will be a remaster or a remake.

In addition, the leaker talked about numerous other projects that have nothing to do with the remaster/remake, such as an ambitious mix of Monster Hunter and Shadow of the Colossus.

Can you believe it?

There is no reliable method to prove this person”s claims. So don”t count on such a project actually appearing next year or the year after. But once in a nutshell:

This speaks for the leak:

  • (According to the news site Xfire) some of the creator”s statements were verified by a moderator of the subreddit r/GamingLeaksAndRumours.
  • The post is surprisingly matter-of-factly constructed, when it should only be about generating attention. For instance, the headline doesn”t mention Oblivion at all.
  • The fact that the post and account have been deleted may well be an indication that the creator has committed a breach of contract.

This speaks against the leak:

  • The leaker provides no viewable evidence for his claims.
  • There are also no previous leaks from this person that turned out to be true afterwards. In the post he does talk about the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake as well, but it was revealed a few months ago.
  • It seems rather unlikely that Oblivion will be made in Unreal Engine 5, as Bethesda games are generally very dependent on their engine and tend to rely on Gambryo or, in the meantime, on the Creation Engine.

What do you think about this news? Do you think the claims of the alleged leaker are credible or is someone just trying to make himself important? Would you like to see an official remake of Oblivion at all or is it enough for you that fans are currently working on Skyblivion? Write us your opinion in the comments!
