Arma 3 announces a new expansion almost ten years after its release. It sends you to Normandy in 1944.

The military simulation Arma 3 has already let us fight on various battlefields via expansion: be it the Vietnam War, a fictional armed conflict during the Cold War, or even the fight against aliens. With the now announced expansion Spearhead 1944, we are now going to the Second World War for the first time.

What does the expansion bring?

Spearhead 1944 transports you to Normandy, France, in the titular year, where American forces and the French resistance are fighting against the German occupiers. As Creator DLC, the expansion is being created by an external development team. You can take a first look at the two largest factions, the USA and Germany, in the announcement trailer:

When exactly Spearhead will be released has not been announced yet, but we already know about the most important new features, which are listed (on the Steam page

  • New map: A complete swathe of Normandy land has been recreated on a scale of 1:2, containing several real locations that played an important role in the war. In the area of about 150 square kilometres, you can expect rather rural areas with some villages and small towns.
  • New factions: Spearhead lets you fight on the side of the US troops, the French resistance fighters and the German Wehrmacht. The factions include many new weapons, uniforms and vehicles.
  • Coop Campaign: As a group of up to 24 players, you can experience a seven-mission co-op campaign where you join the US Army.
  • Singleplayer campaign: In singleplayer, you’ll complete risky missions for the French resistance. You have the option to go it alone, or as a group of up to four players.
  • Numerous gameplay features: Operation Spearhead also comprehensively improves and expands the familiar Arma gameplay. Among other things, there is an improved resurrection system and a morale system for AI soldiers. If their morale drops, they retreat or even surrender. Prisoners of war can then be questioned for information.

What do you think of the newly announced expansion for Arma 3? Do you still play the military simulation nowadays from time to time, or have you switched to newer titles? Would you return for Operation Spearhead again, or are you less enthusiastic about the World War II setting? Feel free to post it in the comments!
