Payday competitor falls hard on its face: Crime Boss: Rockay City comes off badly in tests

Crime Boss: Rockay City has had an extremely bumpy start. On Metacritic, the heist shooter doesn”t even reach the 50 rating.

Any positive ratings must have already been stolen by other games – there is hardly a kind word left for the heist shooter Crime Boss: Rockay City in the international reviews.

The game presented itself in trailers like a fun heist shooter like Payday, with an added dash of GTA. It also got attention because of all the stars who starred in it – including Chuck Norris and Danny Glover.

Crime Boss: Rockay City was released on 28 March 2023 for PC at the Epic Store for €40. The release for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S will be in June.

Crime Boss: The international ratings at a glance

On Metacritic, the shooter currently suffers from a painful average score: Crime Boss can gather just 49 points around itself. Even the most positive tests have a lot to complain about.

What the testers say about Crime Boss

Giovanni Panzano from Everyeye.it is still quite positive about Crime Boss and hopes that with some updates it can still develop into a decent game:

If the developers keep their promise and release new, free content and fix some problems, the studio”s first work could take a small place in the gaming landscape. Also thanks to its affordable price.

Screenrant writer Jason Hon, on the other hand, packs the current state into focus – for which he makes a memorable comparison:

In its current state, Crime Boss: Rockay City feels like a would-be criminal looking to get rich quick on a street. But the street is full of multiplayer shooters that are already doing it better.

Lex Luddy of The Gamer finds few positive features left to highlight in his conclusion:

Crime Boss is a game at war with itself. All three modes offer something, but none of them really do their specific thing well. Meanwhile, the characters and text surrounding the missions feel painful, like they”re stuck in 2011. And the customisation is either limited or completely random, making it feel like you never really have control over your loadout.

Game Informer journalist Wesley LeBlanc has the harshest words for Crime Boss:

Crime Boss: Rockay City is proof that star power isn”t everything. In fact, it”s a reminder that celebrity casting does nothing for the game if there”s nothing interesting or fun to support it. When run-ending bugs show up, Crime Boss is miserable. But even when I play a mission without bugs, I witness a painfully boring view of organized crime.

At its best moments, Crime Boss works – I can shoot enemies, rob bank vaults and warehouses for loot, watch cutscenes with familiar faces and voices, and expand my empire – but it never grabs my attention in a meaningful or memorable way. Instead, it pushes me further and further away, leaving me with no desire to ever return to Rockay City.

Were you expecting Crime Boss to be a shooter highlight or have you been rather sceptical since the first trailer? Will you still give it a try or would you rather wait for Payday 3? Feel free to let us know in the comments
