PS5 Pro: Rumors about release, price & performance

Around three years after the release of the Playstation 5, more and more rumors are swirling around a possible Pro version. We collect all leaks about the PS5 Pro in the following overview

The Playstation 5 came onto the market almost three years ago. However, the German release on November 19, 2020 was accompanied by a number of availability problems, not least due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The situation has since largely calmed down, meaning that the PS5 is now fully operational as a current-gen console.

However, some prospective buyers are waiting for the Pro version of the Playstation 5, which is said to be in the works and, like the PS4 Pro, will offer a technical upgrade to the current console generation.

This PS5 Pro is said to have been in development for some time. In the following overview, we show you the rumors and information circulating about the Playstation 5 Pro

  • PS5 Pro Specs: New hardware rumors and date for Sony leak

Update from December 12: The user RandomlyRandom67 claims in the ResetEra forum (December 09, 23) that he has data on the PS5 Pro. However, this is not a known or reliable leaker. Take the following

RandomlyRandom67 has posted some data that lists you here:

    • Viola [alleged code name of the SOC of the PS 5 Pro] is manufactured on TSMC N4P.
    • GFX1115
    • For compatibility reasons, Viola’s CPU will retain the zen2 architecture of the conventional PS5, but the frequency will again be dynamic, peaking at 4.4 GHz. 64 KB L1 cache per core, 512 KB L2 cache per core and 8 MB shared L3 cache (4 MB per CCX)
    • Viola has 30WGPs (WorkGroup Processors) when fully enabled, but it will only have 28WGPs (56 CUs) enabled for the silicon in the retail PS5 Pro units.
    • Trinity [alleged codename for the PS 5 Pro] is the culmination of three key technologies. Fast storage (hardware accelerated compression and decompression, an existing PS5 key technology), accelerated ray tracing and upscaling.
    • The architecture is that of RDNA3, but adopts the ray tracing improvements of RDNA4. BVH traversal is handled by dedicated RT hardware instead of relying entirely on the shaders. It will also include thread reordering to reduce data and execution divergence, similar to Ada Lovelace SER and Intel Arc’s TSU.
    • 16 GB GDDR6 with 18 Gbit/s. 256-bit memory bus with a memory bandwidth of 576 GB/s.
    • The target GPU frequency is 2.0 GHz. This means that the dual-issue TFLOPs are in the range of 28.67 TFLOPs peak (224 (TMUs) * 2 (operations, dual issue) * 2 (core clock)). 14.33 TFLOPs if we disregard the dual issue factor.
    • 50-60% rasterization increase over Oberon and Oberon Plus, more than double the raw RT performance.
    • The XDNA2 NPU will be used to accelerate Sony’s customized machine learning upscaling technology. This will be one of the main focuses of the PS5 Pro, just as we saw on the PS4 Pro with checkerboard rendering. The goal is to achieve a time-stable, upscaled 4K output with more than 30 FPS.
    • Unveiling in September 2024

When could this data be confirmed or denied?  Tom Henderson from Insider-Gaming was asked by a user (on Twitter) how accurate the data from RandomlyRandom67 is.

  • He has neither confirmed nor denied them and points out that Sony expects a full leak of the data later this month (December 23). This is because the PS5 Pro dev kits are supposed to be distributed to third party studios this month.

    Previous rumors and leaks

Where it says Pro on it, there must be Pro in it – accordingly, a proper hardware upgrade is expected for the new version of the PS5 console. The first information that confirms this to a certain extent comes from TV manufacturer TCL, which gave a preview of the technical data during a presentation

    According to

TCL, the Playstation 5 Pro will allow natively rendered 4K resolution with up to 120 frames per second. 8K resolution will also be possible with the PS5 Pro, although suitable televisions and material are still few and far between.

This is to be made possible, among other things, by GPU performance that is on a par with the Radeon RX 7700 XT. This would roughly double the computing power of the RDNA 2 generation currently in use, which would also have an impact on ray tracing capacities

The leaker RedGamingTech is also said to have already obtained specific data. The (Reddit community) is skeptical about the leak.

The hardware leaker Kepler_L2, who is considered reliable, posted on X on December 05, 23 that GTA 6 would only run at 30 FPS on the PS5 Pro if the conventional PS5 does not reach 60 FPS. He justifies this by saying that the CPU upgrade of the Pro version should only be small.

PS5 Pro Release: Next September at the latest?

Contradictory information is currently circulating about the potential launch date of the Playstation 5 Pro. However, all leaks agree that the PS5 Pro will arrive by the end of 2024 at the latest

For Tom Henderson from the Insider Gaming portal, it is certain that the Pro version is already in development. In relation to the release dates of the previous generations, he considers a release in November 2024 to be realistic.

According to a new rumor posted by a user in the forum (ResetEra) the PS5 Pro is to be announced in September 2024.

Jeff Grubb, reporter at Giant Bomb, also mentioned in a (Video) shortly before Christmas that he can confirm the rumors and “leaks” surrounding the PS5 Pro launch in September 2024. However, he does not reveal how he can be so sure of this

PS5 Pro price: Higher RRP conceivable

To date, there has been little to no solid information on the price of the PS5 Pro. However, Jeff Grubb, reporter at Giant Bomb, has provided some highly unofficial price details.

According to this, the PS5 Pro will cost 600 dollars. That would be 50 dollars more than the disc version of the current PS5. If we compare the price with the digital version, there is already a difference of 150 dollars.

However, you should take this data with a grain of salt, as it has not been officially confirmed

The only way to get precise data is to look at how the prices of the PS4 and PS4 Pro have developed. However, this paints a different picture: there was no difference between the PS4 and PS4 Pro in terms of RRP on their respective release dates. Both consoles started at a price of 400 euros.

So the hope remains that the Playstation 5 August 2022 price increase will remain a one-off, but the information from Jeff Grubb makes this less likely.

About a year ago, Sony changed the MSRP of the PS5 as follows:

  • PS5 with UHD Blu-ray drive: 549,99 Euro (old RRP: 499,99 Euro)
  • PS5 Digital Edition: 449,99 Euro (old RRP: 399,99 Euro)

PS5 Pro Design: With removable drive?
One of the points of criticism that Sony has sometimes had to listen to is the design of the Playstation 5: too clunky, too big, too unattractive. Although the Japanese manufacturer offers some special editions of the Playstation 5 with a fresh look – such as the limited edition PS5 design for Spider-Man 2 – this does not change the general structure.

The manufacturer seems to have taken the feedback to heart. The Slim version of the Playstation 5 has a removable drive and this could also be the case with the PS5 Pro

Now it’s up to you: Would you get a Playstation 5 Pro? What features does it need to have to be interesting for you – or are you counting on the regular PS5 being cheaper with a Pro release? Is a slim version more interesting for you than a Pro version? Let us know your opinion in the comments below:
