The Digital Edition comes with a new twist
Three years ago, the PlayStation 5 was launched and at the approximate halfway point before the next console, the manufacturer is releasing new models, as (Sony) itself announced on its blog.
There is only one PS5
Sony is not establishing the new variant as a possibility, but is replacing the still current predecessor model with it. In concrete terms, this means that once the current stock is sold out, the new iteration will come into use
Although it’s not marketed as a slimmed-down version, Sony has slimmed its console down considerably.
Old PS5 with drive | 39 x 10 x 26 cm | 3.9 kg |
Old PS5 Digital Edition | 39 x 9 x 26 cm | 3.4 kg |
New PS5 with drive | 36 x 10 x 22 | 3.2 kg |
New PS5 Digital Edition | 36 x 8 x 22 cm | 2.6 kg |
According to the Japanese, the PS5 loses 30 per cent in volume and weighs 18 per cent less.
Clever: If you buy the new Digital Edition, you can upgrade the drive for just under 120 euros if you want. You simply plug it in through a cover on the side.
Any technical developments?
Yes, but not too much. Sony installs an SSD hard drive ex works, of which you could previously use 825 GB. The new version will then provide the full 1 TB of storage.
There are two USB-C ports on the front and an additional USB-A port on the back.
In addition, the stand will be a little spruced up. If you want to put your new PS5 upright, Sony will charge you an additional 29.99 euros (RRP). The stand is not included in the console bundle.
Prices and availability
The release is soon: in November 2023, Sony plans to launch the new console, at least in the US.
Since the new PS5 will not be sold as a standalone console, but as a new iteration of the existing one, nothing will change in terms of price.
The PS5 with drive will continue to be priced at an RRP of £549.99, with the Digital Edition priced at £449.99.
Important to know: Due to the new dimensions, old faceplates, i.e. the side panels, will probably no longer be compatible. In the future, Sony will probably offer new designs accordingly.
Sony also has the (Project Q in the pipeline)
Sony is giving its PlayStation 5 a three-year anniversary makeover, with a few nice features: smaller dimensions, a stylish stripe and an upgradeable drive. What do you think of the new design? Will you upgrade? Or will you wait until the new version is in circulation? Post it in the comments.
