An upcoming real-time strategy game is popping up on Steam that aims to revive old virtues – and bears a striking resemblance to Warcraft 3.
An upcoming real-time strategy game on Steam apparently wants to appeal to Warcraft fans in particular. So much so that at first (and second) glance it’s hard to even tell it apart from the original.
Purple War focuses on a single-player campaign and multiplayer battles between humans, orcs and elves. And on an art design that draws heavily on the Warcraft 3 model. Some buildings and units look confusingly similar to Warcraft 3.
What’s behind Purple War?
The South Korean developer studio Warlogics, which was only founded in 2020, is responsible for the real-time strategy game. Purple War will soon be released on Steam in Early Access and, with player feedback, will be completed within a planned six months.
The story of Purple War revolves around the land of Daivos, which is plagued by natural disasters, whereupon a war breaks out between humans, elves and orcs. Players are now to take on the role of one of the races and fight battles.
In addition to the multiplayer mode, which is the focus of the game, Purple War will also offer a single-player campaign. According to the developer’s description, the game should be easy to learn and play quickly.
Where is the similarity to Warcraft 3?
Even on paper, Purple War shows certain similarities to Warcraft 3. Watch the trailer and you’ll quickly see what we’re talking about:
A direct comparison with an image from the remaster Warcraft 3: Reforged shows how similar, for example, some of the Orcs’ buildings look in Purple War:
Clearly recognisable: From the design to elements such as the huge horns to the palisades, buildings in Purple War resemble the model Warcraft 3. The basic orientation, the races and the transported mood also evoke memories of Blizzard’s strategy game series.
Interesting time
Taking inspiration from big names is common practice in the games industry. Often, motifs or designs from competitors are given their own spin and reissued. Not infrequently with great success, as the Saints Row series proves as a wacky GTA cousin.
Warlogics now emerged in 2020 and began developing Purple War. We recall: the much-criticised Warcraft 3: Reforged was released in January of the same year. Possibly the developers of Purple War want to offer a new home to the disappointed players of Warcraft 3: Reforged.
