Redemption for Warcraft 3: Reforged? Blizzard fuels fan hopes with version 2.0

A few days ago, new versions of the game were apparently uploaded to test servers for a short period of time. Since then, speculation has been rife.

Warcraft 3: Reforged should be a big hit for Blizzard. Instead, the game turned into a debacle for the development studio. For four years, the game has not been able to live up to its own expectations.

After a leak, fans are now hoping that the game will undergo fundamental changes after all – even though Blizzard has already had plenty of time to do so.

Patch only a few hours online

Specifically, it’s about screenshots that have been circulating on social media and several websites for several days. The images originally came from the page blizztrack, which tracks updates for all Blizzard games.

On October 16, around 2 p.m. CEST, according to these screenshots, internal Public Test Realms (PTR) were temporarily updated to patch 2.0.

After about 16 hours, this change was reverted. The internal Warcraft build named “w3d” reverted to patch 1.36. Fans now suspect that Blizzard is planning something big at Reforged.

Theories and speculation from fans

The YouTuber Back2Warcraft compared the patch versions of other Blizzard games with each other and concludes in his video that a possible update to version 2.0 could only mean that an add-on is imminent.

In the subreddit warcraft3, on the other hand, user Layverest speculates that a reboot could be imminent. He refers to a survey from early 2023 In it, players were asked in which areas the game needs to improve.

There is no official confirmation of the rumors from Blizzard. On the one hand, the story could be about the mistake of a Blizzard employee.

On the other hand, this patch could be related to announcements by Blizzard President Johanna Faries. At this year’s Gamescom, she announced anniversary events for the current Blizzard games to mark the 20th anniversary of World of Warcraft.

Incidentally, Warcraft 3: Reforged was the reason why the development studio did not launch another RTS game, according to an industry insider. Just recently, journalist Jason Schreier revealed on Reddit that Blizzard had proposals and prototypes for other titles.

According to Schreier, however, the Blizzard management team had “no appetite for a new RTS game” after Reforged flopped so badly. As a result, the plans for Warcraft 4 also disappeared into the drawer again.
