MicroProse releases Regiments on Steam. Among early birds, the tactics game with a Cold War scenario meets with a lot of approval
In the alternative Cold War of Regiments, the rivalry between NATO and the Warsaw Pact escalates into an armed conflict. Publisher MicroProse released the real-time strategy game on Steam on 16 August.
And the first 200 or so player reviewers paint a very positive picture of the tactical game. The battles in the fictitious Germany of 1989 have received 90 percent positive Steam ratings. We summarise what users like so much about Regiments and what critics find annoying.
Before that, you can get a quick overview of how Regiments plays in the trailer:
What Steam players think of Regiments
More than one reads the comparison to the strategy games from Eugen Systems, such as the Wargame or Steel Division series as well as the Early Access title Warno. Unlike these games, however, Regiments focuses exclusively on single-player strategy.
Player (Evil-Six) also praises the game speed and writes:
People ask if this is a good alternative to the Eugene series games like Wargame, Steel Division and the new Warno, and I say YES! I have all the Eugen games, but I have a hard time getting into them because almost all of them are multiplayer focused and the games are so incredibly fast paced and require such a high level of micromanagement that it”s just frenetic clicking all the time.
That”s not the way I want to play war games. Regiments is fast-paced, but gives you enough time to think about and plan your tactical moves, and also gives you a bit of leeway if you want to zoom in and just watch a battle on the map, which I think has rarely been the case in games similar to this
Even more in-depth is the YouTuber from (Sim UK) who received the game for free. He describes the battles as heavy
and wildly back and forth
What Regiments lacks in strategic depth, it makes up for with many tactical options. The YouTuber describes the graphics as grandiose
, which is also due to the high level of detail of vehicles and units.
The screenshots show more of the regimental graphics:
On the negative side, Sim UK decrees the lack of multiplayer as well as various flaws in the control of the units. For example, units could not be automatically sent for repair and rearmament at the touch of a button.
Another player named (Taktikal Takoyaki) gives Regiments an overall negative rating, citing one main reason:
“You don”t move tanks, helicopters and so on. You move NATO markers. I mean, sure, you could zoom all the way in. But why would you do that? You can”t play these kinds of games effectively that way”
Furthermore, the user decries Regiments” sound design as terribly unconvincing and lifeless. As already said: this user remains in the clear minority with his negative assessment. Most of the players have been impressed with Regiments so far.
How about you guys? Have you already played Regiments and can you tell us what you think? Is your impression rather positive or negative? Feel free to write us in the comments!
