The Darkness, a rather dark action game, could be making a comeback in the future – but nothing is set in stone yet.

For some years now, remakes and remasters of older games have been all the rage. The latter fate could also befall a cult shooter from 2007 in the future: The Darkness

Cult because although the title got off to a rather slow start and only achieved a mediocre average score of (80) (PlayStation 3) and (82 points) (Xbox) on Metacritic, it became a community favourite over the following years. Time and again, for example, (on Reddit) old and new fans romp about, remaining loyal to the shooter.

Fan request receives a pleasing response

One of these addressed fans goes by the name of Charles and has made a post on the social network X, once known as Twitter, asking that someone bring back The Darkness as a remaster.

This post did not go unnoticed. Numerous replies recommended that he play the Xbox variant, which would also be playable on the Series X/S thanks to backwards compatibility. But since Charles doesn’t have a Microsoft console at home, that didn’t help him. Then Stephen Kick replied.

Who is this? Stephen Kick is the CEO of Nightdive Studios. They are now real experts in remasters and remakes, having recently released both the System Shock remake and the Quake 2 remaster, and with remaster versions of Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion and Star Wars: Dark Forces, they have two more projects in the pipeline.

Stephen Kick’s short answer to The Darkness fan Charles: It’s on the list. While this is not yet official confirmation that a remaster of the shooter will become a reality, it is at least a legitimate glimmer of hope.

At least in Germany, a potential remaster will probably only be released in cut form – the original never made it to the shelves here in the uncut version, but ended up on the index due to the high level of violence.

Did you play The Darkness back then? If so, how did you like the shooter? Were you also impressed by the sequel released in 2012? Remaster or remake, which of the two comeback variants would you prefer and why exactly? We are eager to hear your opinion, so feel free to write it in the comments!
