The next edition of the famous survival horror game could let us explore the game world completely freely for the first time, but this has not yet been confirmed

Some Resident Evil fans may be shocked when they look at the calendar: Yes, the release of Resident Evil 4 Remake was a whole year ago!

So it’s high time for a new Resi. The next installment in the main series has probably been in development for some time now. Now an insider, who is usually considered to be well-informed, has dropped a hint that makes us sit up and take notice: Will Resident Evil 9 have an open world?

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is said to have done the groundwork

The claim comes from Dusk Golem, who has leaked some accurate info outside of the Resi franchise in the past, such as the full plot of the free horror snack Silent Hill: The Short Message.

He’s also been wrong a few times, so you know what that means: always view new info on Resident Evil 9 with a pinch of skepticism until it turns out to be true.

According to Dusk Golem, Resident Evil 9 will offer an open world for free exploration. The eighth installment, Resident Evil: Village, already allowed us to explore a village and its surroundings at our own pace, but it wasn’t a true open world.

Resi 9 is said to have the technical possibilities for an open world because the horror game is based on the latest version of Capcom’s in-house RE Engine. This also powers the recently released Dragon’s Dogma 2 and has been specially expanded for the role-playing game in terms of the open world.

Resident Evil 9 and the already announced Monster Hunter Wilds would also make use of these new possibilities.

Five new Resident Evil games in the works?

Back in February 2024, Dusk Golem revealed a few supposed details about the future of Resident Evil. According to him there are currently five new games in development – which ones exactly, he left open, which is why he is not uncontroversial in the Resi community.

For this reason, we would like to remind you once again: Wait until Resident Evil 9 is officially announced before you start planning your journey through the horror open world now.

When will Resi 9 be unveiled? We don’t know either – but it’s not impossible that we’ll hear something about the game in 2024, after all, the release of Village was three years ago, oh my!
