Somewhat surprisingly, a sequel to Monkey Island was announced yesterday. The game series is considered a classic and has faded into obscurity since the 2010 re-releases.

Behind You! A completely unexpected game announcement! In fact, publisher Devolver Digital has just announced a new Monkey Island out of nowhere. In other words, a sequel to one of the most legendary point & click adventure games of all time.

The new game is called Return to Monkey Island and is scheduled for release in 2022. Not much is known about the concrete content so far. But at least there is a first trailer, which probably gives a foretaste of the art style of the new adventure. In addition, it has already been announced that inventor Ron Gilbert will again be significantly involved. The original co-writer Dave Grossman is also involved again. All that’s missing now is Tim Schafer.

A new third part?

Surprisingly, publisher Devolver also shared on Twitter that Return to Monkey Island will pick up where Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge left off 30 years ago. This makes sense in that after Monkey Island 2, both Gilbert and Grossman were no longer involved in the further development of Monkey Island’s sequels.

So apparently in 2022 we will finally learn what vision the original writers actually had in mind with a sequel. The events from The Curse of Monkey Island, Escape from Monkey Island and Tales of Monkey Island will therefore be completely irrelevant for the new part.

Incidentally, the game is being developed by Gilbert’s own studio Terrible Toybox, while Lucasfilm Games is acting as licensor. Lucasfilm Games itself was only re-established a year ago. Even then, this raised some hopes for a new Monkey Island:
