Refreshes of the Xbox Series X/S as well as the PlayStation 5 are said to be not long in coming. But you’d better take this news with a grain of salt.

Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 have been on the market for less than a year. Due to the continuing difficult supply situation of hardware components, not all interested parties have been able to purchase the console of their choice by a long shot, and the next generations from Microsoft and Sony are already appearing on the horizon.

The Youtuber Moore’s Law Is Dead, known for his leaks on graphics cards and processors, claims to have received information on refreshes of the Xbox Series X/S as well as the PlayStation 5. How reliable his information about consoles is, however, is questionable. You can watch the entire video in English here:

2022: Xbox Series S and PlayStation 5 Slim

The new edition of the Xbox Series S, which is to be released towards the end of 2022, will kick things off. The aim is to take on the PlayStation 5 Slim, which is expected to be released in the same period. In addition, the Xbox Series S is the driving force for the Xbox Game Pass, which Microsoft wants to further expand.

New Series S 50 per cent faster?

The Xbox Series S refresh is said to be based on AMD’s upcoming APU generation. According to current rumours, the Ryzen 6000 processors, codenamed Rembrandt, are manufactured in a 6-nanometre process and are based on the Zen 3+ architecture, an improvement of Zen 3 (Ryzen 5000).

The performance of the Xbox Series S could perhaps even be increased by up to 50 percent. Instead of 20 compute units as before, 24 compute units will be used in future for the calculation of graphics. Together with higher efficiency, increased clock speeds and faster RAM, such a massive increase in performance is quite realistic.

The new Xbox Series S is supposed to cost 350 US dollars or less, the price for the previous Series S will then drop to 190 to 250 US dollars.

2023: Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 Pro

The Xbox Series X refresh is scheduled for release in 2023. However, there is no information on the possible specifications and the price so far.

PlayStation 5 Pro

There are a few more details on the PlayStation 5 Pro: The mid-gen console is scheduled for release at the end of 2023 at the earliest, but at the end of 2024 at the latest. A Zen 4 APU based on a 5-nanometre process could be used, as well as a new graphics unit.
According to Moore’s Law Is Dead, the PlayStation 5 will cost between 600 and 700 US dollars. By comparison, the RRP for the regular PlayStation 5 is around $400.

Finally, we would like to point out that these are unconfirmed rumours and that we are unable to assess the reliability of Moore’s Law Is Dead, especially with regard to the console market. As far as graphics cards and processors are concerned, he has been able to make good predictions time and again in the recent past, for example about Ryzen 5000, Radeon RX 6000 and Geforce RTX 3000. However, he has also been wrong before.

What do you think? Are the mid-gen consoles really coming so soon? Feel free to write it in the comments!
