Developer Jagex is giving the classic MMO a new twist and sending you into the Dragonwilds in a cooperative survival game.

RuneScape: Dragonwilds is a new co-op survival game with an open world and in the Unreal Engine 5, based on the world of the well-known MMO. Developer Jagex plans to release an early access version on Steam in spring 2025.

The new RuneScape survival game

Dragonwilds is part of the continent of Ashenfall, and not the game world you explore in the MMO. Before we go into detail, here are the most important facts about RuneScape: Dragonwilds:

  • Genre: open-world survival game
  • Number of players: Dragonwilds can be played alone or with up to four players in co-op.
  • Release: Early Access is planned to start in spring 2025.
  • Cost: No price has been set yet.

    What’s in RuneScape: Dragonwilds

Your overarching goal is to defeat the Dragonqueen. However, as is common in the genre, you will spend less time slaying dragons and more time farming and crafting.

Unlike in comparable games in the genre such as Enshrouded or Valheim, you don’t necessarily have to tackle oak and copper ore with an axe and pickaxe.

Through the “wild, transformative magic” in Aschenfall, you can cut down trees with a conjured spectral axe and blow up ore veins with a spell The collected resources are then used to create everything you need.

This includes, of course, tools, weapons and armor, but also the brewing of potions. From individual components and furniture, you can create your own base, which will then serve as a starting point for your explorations.

A progression system that allows you to unlock new spells, recipes and abilities is also a genre standard, like a form of need for water and food for your character.

Although Ashenfall is a new continent, RuneScape veterans should recognize some of the enemies. In addition, some of the locations in Dragonwilds were inspired by the world of the well-known MMO

You can already put RuneScape: Dragonwilds on your Steam wishlist. On April 15, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. , a stream with more details about the game is also planned on Twitch

Jagex has already completed a few alpha tests with small groups of players, but wants to collect more feedback in Early Access and develop the game further together with the community. RuneScape: Dragonwilds is set to remain in Early Access at least until 2026, but a release on other platforms is planned for later. However, there are no concrete plans for this yet.
