More patience will probably be needed before RDNA 4 is released.
AMD’s RX 8000 generation is increasingly the subject of rumors.
Only recently, the company confirmed one of these leaks: The graphics cards based on the RDNA-4 architecture will not include a high-end model. Now, rather bad news about the release date is emerging.
The previous state of the rumors was still based on the release of RX 8000 at the upcoming CES 2025. The trade show will take place in Las Vegas (USA) from January 7 to 10. According to the YouTube channel “Moore’s Law is Dead,” which cites internal sources, RX 8000 is to be postponed.
However: MLID is considered to be rather average in the world of leakers, so you should enjoy the following information with caution.
As MLID explains, AMD partners should assume that the release of RX 8000 will “most certainly” be postponed to the first quarter of 2025. This assumption is based, of all things, on the current generation around the Radeon RX 7000.
So larger dealers are still sitting on a “massive oversupply” of graphics cards in the RDNA-3 series. In particular, the high-end cards based on the Navi 31 chip are selling rather sluggishly – that is, the Radeon RX 7900 XT, XTX and GRE. AMD’s entry-level and mid-range offerings are “acceptable” in terms of sales and inventory.
However, a glimmer of hope for a strong announcement is emerging from the rather problematic situation for RX 8000. This is because the upcoming RDNA-4 graphics cards are said to offer a “significantly better price-performance ratio” than their predecessors.
In view of this, it is all the more urgent for AMD and partners to get the high remaining stocks of RX 7000 to customers. A simultaneous and, above all, strong successor generation would make this extremely difficult.
Compared to Nvidia, AMD would position itself with such a launch strategy after the RTX 5090/5080 – which, as mentioned at the beginning, it doesn’t want to compete against anyway – but still before the competitor’s mid-range GPUs.
- The RTX 5090 is expected at CES 2025, as is the RTX 5080.
- The situation is much less clear for the mid-range models starting with the RTX 5070 Ti. Based on the intervals for previous GPUs, the launch is not expected until the second quarter of 2025 at the earliest.
- Reminder:The RTX 4090 was released on October 12, 2022, while the RTX 4070 was released only half a year later, on April 13, 2023.
- Only the RTX 4070 Ti came out comparatively quickly in January 2023, but that was just a rebranded RTX 4080 in the wake of Nvidia’s unprecedented withdrawal.
Now we want to know your opinion: Would you wait longer for the new AMD GPUs around the RX-8000 series if the rumored “strong price-performance ratio” materialized? How do you rate the delay? What performance and price point would RDNA 4 have to deliver for that? Let us know in the comments!
