RX 9000: New AMD GPUs finally have a launch date – and it’s drawing harsh criticism from the community

AMD has announced a release date for the RX 9070 (XT): the GPUs are scheduled to hit stores in March. The reactions are negative.

AMD lets the cat out of the bag. Or at least its head.

Because after the Radeon manufacturer was very reluctant to provide any specific information about the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT at CES 2025, there is now an official statement from AMD’s Vice President David McAfee on X/Twitter regarding the release date of the two GPUs.

According to this, McAfee “can’t wait for the cards [of the Radeon 9000 series] to hit the shelves in March”.

There is also still no information about the previously announced event at which the RX 9070 (XT) is to be presented in more detail.
As the colleagues from PC Games Hardware report, the chaos is even deeper than originally assumed (thanks to our reader “Hellfire13” for the hint). Because the salami tactics are said to have their origin in a false price setting.

  • According to this, AMD simply set the prices of the Radeon RX 9070 (XT) too high, expecting Nvidia’s RTX 5000 series to be more expensive as well, or at least to maintain the price of its direct predecessors.
  • As is well known, however, the major competitor has surprisingly chosen the opposite path and sent GPUs like the RTX 5080 into the race significantly cheaper than the RTX 4080.
  • In view of the price pressure, AMD has decided to shorten the CES keynote and is working on a solution to determine how and at what price it can still win over potential customers.

Unpleasant side effect: The first deliveries to online retailers are said to have already taken place – at the originally set price.

Should AMD lower the prices for the RX 9070 (XT) in order to remain competitive, the retailers must also be satisfied so that they do not remain sitting on full warehouses at inflated purchase prices.

“AMD stands for absolute marketing disaster”

The PC community seems to have lost its patience.

In several subreddits like PCMR; AMD is being torn to shreds not only because of its ongoing secrecy, but also because of the late and inaccurate launch date. Some comments take refuge in gallows humor at this point: “AMD stands for absolute marketing disaster, right?”
Not everyone still finds the situation funny. On AMD’s own subreddit, users are more objective, but also much harsher on the Radeon manufacturer.

The criticism can be divided into several categories:

  • AMD should “stop these idiotic attempts to respond to Nvidia and just release the best possible products at competitive prices,” says one comment
  • AMD’s current strategy “not only looks pathetic, but has also backfired every time it has been tried” – however, the comment does not provide a specific comparative value.
  • The manufacturer is also accused of not believing in its own products, because it would have “screamed the benchmarks and the price from the rooftops” and dared to enter into direct competition with Nvidia.

AMD is not understood in almost any user reaction. Many already call the RX-9000 series “DoA” (Dead on Arrival) or are sure that they would rather use an Nvidia GPU for their next PC.
