At State of Play, Sony unveils a new action role-playing game from Team Ninja. A first trailer shows the historical Japan of the 19th century

The State of Play on 13 September had a number of announcements in store. PC players can also look forward to many of them, but the promising Rise of the Ronin in particular will be released exclusively for the Playstation. However, there is a good chance that Sony will also bring the title to the PC – otherwise it would probably have been announced as “exclusive” instead of “console exclusive”.

You”ve never seen Japan like this before

Rise of the Ronin shows you Japan at the end of the Edo period in the 19th century. The developers also want to tell you about the darkest sides of this era, which many have shied away from until now. But now we want to show you the trailer first:

But what exactly kind of game will Rise of the Ronin be? PlayStation”s announcement and the first trailer already contain the most important information:

Known developers

Rise of the Ronin is being developed by Team Ninja, who most recently released the Final Fantasy prequel Stranger of Paradise and the action role-playing game Nioh 2. So we can expect probably challenging fights, using not only katana and other classic weapons, but also resorting to firearms. The game is also said to be Team Ninja”s most ambitious project to date.

World and History

Besides the action fights, with which the developers have already gained a lot of experience, the story should also be in the foreground. Rise of the Ronin relies on a historically inspired setting, which probably does without fantasy elements for the most part.

It takes place in 19th century Japan, which is facing a major upheaval after centuries of isolation. The end of the Edo period is heralded by the arrival of the black ships shown in the trailer, an American fleet that forced an opening of Japanese ports to the West.

(There is supposed to be a multi-layered story and characters with their own motivations. I guess this American officer plays an important role too).

We ourselves slip into the role of a ronin at this time, a samurai who serves no master. We explore the open world and freely decide which side we want to be on in various conflicts. For example, there is talk of a civil war between the ruling Tokugawa shogunate and their opponents.

Rise of the Ronin doesn”t have a firm release date yet, but it”s due out for Playstation 5 in 2024. Whether it will also be released on PC at the same time is currently unknown.

What do you think of Rise of the Ronin? Would you like to try out a game by Team Ninja that attempts this dark setting and hope for a later PC release? Or are you already looking forward to the new Assassin”s Creed in Japan and don”t need another open world with a similar scenario? Feel free to post your opinion in the comments!
