Prime Video has released the official teaser for the New World: Aeternum episode of the upcoming animation anthology Secret Level. The teaser, shared via social media, offers a first glimpse at the humorous and emotional story based on the world of the popular online RPG New World.
In the episode of Secret Level, a self-centered hero finds himself stranded on the supernatural island of Aeternum, where he has to come to terms with the concept of eternal life – a central mechanic of the game in which characters respawn again and again after dying. The focus is not only on adventure, but also on topics such as friendship, self-knowledge and the second chance that eternal life offers.
Humorous interpretation of New World: Aeternum
Tim Miller, co-founder of animation studio Blur, explains that the idea for the episode was born out of the game’s unique mythology. “New World takes an element of gaming that is so common that we hardly think about it – respawn – and turns it into a central narrative,” explains Miller. The Amazon Games team deliberately left room for humorous approaches during development. ‘The opportunity to explore the mechanics of respawn in a comedic way immediately fascinated us,’ adds Miller.
The episode goes beyond pure parody, though. According to Miller, viewers can expect an emotional journey that contrasts with typical heroic stories. “It’s not just about action, but also about heart and humor. When you bring all that together, it makes for a really good story.”
Blur Studio and Amazon Games are collaborating
For the New World: Aeternum episode, Blur Studio and Amazon Games worked closely together, incorporating both the core of the game and new creative impulses. Rob Chestney, Narrative Director at Amazon Games, describes the result as an unexpected, fresh perspective on the world of Aeternum. “The story is about twisting the world a little and looking at it from a new angle. It’s a tale of new beginnings, told with a good sense of humor.”
The teaser gives a taste of the visual and narrative quality fans can expect, and shows how the concept of eternal life on Aeternum provides some surprising twists. With this episode, Secret Level once again proves how versatile and creative video games can be as a source of inspiration for visual media.
Which other titles in the gaming world Secret Level will take up, you can find out in our report on the announcement of the series. The anthology was first mentioned during this year’s Opening Night Live at Gamescom.
