Things are still not going well for Skull & Bones. Now another creative director is taking his leave.

It doesn’t look good on the horizon: Skull & Bones, the pirate game from the house of Ubisoft, loses its creative director again. It is the third time that this position has changed – not a good sign for an already problematic development.

Farewell after the beta

Elisabeth Pellen had been involved with Skull & Bones since 2018 and until recently served as the game’s creative director. But now, a few days after the beta of Skull & Bones, it has been announced that she has left Ubisoft Singapore and returned to Ubisoft Paris. A successor or replacement is not yet known, nor are the exact reasons for Pellen’s departure.

What do Creative Directors do? Creative Director is a senior position in video game development. They typically see a game through from the concept phase to release, working with all teams and making sure the game always stays on its intended creative course.

From 25 to 28 August 2023, selected players were able to try out Skull & Bones for themselves. The conclusion of most is mixed, for example (here on Reddit). It is a fun and largely bug-free game, but full of dull collection quests and little innovation – and already in the beta the Battle Pass was in the game along with real money currency.

Skull & Bones has been pushing its release date like a bow wave for years currently it is said that the pirate game will be released sometime in 2024. Whether Pellet’s departure will have any influence on this is unclear. After all, the release has already been postponed six times.

Do you think that Skull & Bones will be released as planned in 2024? Are you still looking forward to the pirate game that actually wanted to take over the legacy of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag? Or have the many postponements and bad news during development made you sceptical? Feel free to let us know in the comments.
