Beneath, a single-player shooter that sends you on an eerie journey through a secret underwater base, is expected to be released in 2024
I’m going to put forward a steep thesis: If we end up in a creepy, secret research facility in a game, we don’t want to stay there in the vast majority of cases. This is also true for the shooter Beneath, which wants to virtually whisk us away to such a place in 2024 on PC, Xbox Series X/S and PS5. Here’s a brief summary of what it’s all about and what makes the game so special
You have dug too deep
As the official website of Beneath reveals, through a series of unforeseen events we find ourselves as experienced deep-sea divers in a research station at the bottom of the sea. We soon realize that horrors beyond our wildest imagination are lurking here.
The curiosity and fascination of the unknown has led scientists to delve far too deeply into the mysteries of the cosmos
here. The developers do not want to reveal what dangers have been awakened here, but enemy soldiers and human-like monsters could already be seen in the announcement trailer
But how does the shooter actually play? The developers have also revealed a few details on Steam:
- Destructible environments: With your firearms, you can destroy almost everything around you in Beneath. This applies to glass panes, furniture, concrete pillars and almost all lights, which then go out or dangle from the ceiling on a cable. The trailer above shows what this looks like.
- Scarcity of ammunition: As in survival horror games, you have to use your weapons such as assault rifles, pistols or shotguns with care. Ammunition is scarce and you should proceed tactically. You can also use the environment to your advantage.
- Clever AI: Your opponents should
be adaptable
which probably means that they react to your behavior and also proceed tactically. - Mental health: Apparently, your suffering mental health also plays a role. How exactly this is supposed to work is still unclear, you may experience hallucinations or become otherwise weakened.
- Exploration: In your diving suit, you not only explore the underwater station, but also repeatedly dive to the seabed. While exploring, you will probably also find computers, records and the like, which will tell you more about the history of the facility.
