Soulmask is a highly anticipated open-world survival epic that took 3rd place at Steam Next Fest in February and was recently named the most popular upcoming game at the Steam Open World Survival Crafting Fest. On May 31st, the highly sought-after game will finally be released in Early Access on Steam.
If you’re wondering why players are so eagerly anticipating this game, you’ll find out in the following paragraphs. Special gameplay features include unique masks, automated tribe management, realistically designed battles and much more.
The centerpiece and main aspect of the game is your mask. Your character in this world is not the hero, but the mask you wear. During player customization, you have the option to choose between three different masks. Each comes with its own unique specializations to help you get started.
The mask offers you great variety and access to various functions. There are 10 unique masks (three of which are available at character creation) that you can uncover on your travels, as well as seven regions of unexplored wilderness and over 20 different terrains.
The biomes range from pristine rainforests to the freezing cold of snow-capped peaks, but beware, you are not alone. Enemies lurk in the wilderness and you will come into conflict with outcast tribes, among others.
The elements and the mysteries the world has to offer bring their own challenges. Ancient civilizations that were once great and proud have left behind dangers for you to overcome.
Soulmask combines many genres and can be described as an open-world, survival, solo or MMO experience. To survive the harsh elements, you must craft, build, gather followers, tame unique mounts and farm.
If you thought you were safe at home and could cozy up by the campfire, you were sadly mistaken. The Outcasts don’t mean well by your dwellers and will scout you out and deploy their own troops to tear down your walls

This is what the masks are all about
We’ve already written about the mask, but there’s more, because the mask is the hero or the villain (you decide) of this journey.
The Mask allows you to immerse yourself in the ancient technologies of a world that once flourished, but is now a wilderness and home to outcasts. The player who dons their mask can unlock new technologies using various crystals obtained from ancient ruins, boss battles and general exploration and chest opening.
The mask relies on mask energy – this is a key function when using abilities and can be replenished by consuming these crystals.
It was mentioned that your character is not the hero. This is because it is up to you how you want to perceive the mask you have found. The mask has taken control of you and has given you, the players, the ability to tap into technologies that would otherwise be lost to civilizations.
With the Mask’s abilities, you are able to control other Outcasts and become Outcasts yourself, as the Mask transfers to the tribesman of their choice.
You can level up the tribesman as you would your own main character in other games and use their unique abilities.
You can also use the masks to unlock technologies to save beloved tribesmen if they fall in battle.
To unlock your map, you will also need the help of the mask by controlling the various scouts in the camps and obtaining information from them.
Without knowledge and memories of how you came to this world, you won’t be able to unlock the areas through exploration like you could in other games.
Tribesmen are also great defenders, gatherers, cooks, blacksmiths and so much more. With each technology branch, you can control additional tribesmen that you recruit throughout the game
There are various ways in which you can level up, from weapon mastery to the mask to the level of your player character.
