The classic shooter Splitgate was the big surprise hit in 2021. With Season 2, the game is now being consistently developed further.
Splitgate was a big surprise hit in 2021 and soon the 2nd Season will start. Fans of old-school shooters should now enjoy the game even more. But what is Splitgate and what will be better? Find out here!
What is Splitgate? Just imagine a classic arena shooter in the style of Halo multiplayer. So rock solid shooter action with lots of dynamics and action. The game is made by the indie developer studio 1047 Games.
Splitgate is available on PC via Steam, but you can also play it on PlayStation or Xbox, even in crossplay with the other platforms.
As already mentioned, the motto here is hearty shooting in arena maps. But Splitgate is more than just another classic shooter. There are also portals in Splitgate.
They work in a similar way to the cult puzzle game Portal.
You knock holes in reality at certain places and through these portals you can then cross large distances at lightning speed.
This allows you to perform nasty flanking manoeuvres or escape from a death zone. You can also shoot through the portals and blow your opponent’s head off from a safe distance and from a completely unexpected angle.
Why is the game so popular? Splitgate creatively mixes the features of several great games. there are elements from several successful shooters in the game.
This all takes place as a fun arena shooter, with non-stop banging and rumbling. The term “Glorious Mayhem” fits this game like no other!
Unlike the often tactically sophisticated and lengthy battle royale battles that still dominate the genre, it’s all about fast, fun action that you can experience in umpteen game modes. This makes Splitgate ideal for after-work action.
Another cool thing about Splitgate is that the high TTK (Time To Kill) makes the game interesting for both professionals and beginners. Because you can endure a comparatively large amount, mistakes made by beginners do not immediately lead to masses of frustrating deaths.
Instead, you can try things out and are not immediately back at the spawn point if the new idea was nonsense in the end.
Then there are the ingenious portals. This way you can catch up with a fleeing enemy and get the kill.
Or you can use the portals defensively and escape after a failed attack just in time to lick your wounds and quickly get back into the game.
Splitgate thus offers a well thought-out mixture of many good shooter ideas that is surprisingly fun. That’s why the servers were so overrun at the start of the beta back in the summer of 2021 that there were long queues.
In the meantime, however, the 2nd season is already imminent in Splitgate and the game will be consistently developed and improved in it.

Splitgate: Season 2 – These are the features
Season 2 at a glance: Season 2 tackles some construction sites in Splitgate. Among other things, there is a new matchmaking system, a map has been improved and, there will be three new game modes. A new Battle Pass, map creator updates and various improvements to the Quality of Life round off the update.
On 2 June 2022, Season 2 will be released for all platforms. Here are the four biggest features again in detail:
Three new game modes
The Splitgate beta already had 18 exciting game modes at release. In Season 2, three new ones will be added. These are a few promising new ways to enjoy the game:
Juggernaut: Here the whole lobby fights against a single player. However, he is the overpowered Juggernaut and especially hard to kill. The already high TTK of Splitgate becomes even more powerful here.
The TTK of Splitgate becomes even more powerful here.
Despite this, the Juggernaut has a hard time against extreme superior numbers and therefore survival is its only goal. The longer the Juggernaut survives against the horde of the rest of the players, the more points it will score in the end.
Hotzone: Here the name says it all. The aim is to conquer a neutral zone. But that’s only half the battle, because you have to hold the damn thing for 30 seconds. Only then will your team be credited with a point.
This is why every second is fought for especially hard, because if the opponent takes the point just before the timer ends, it’s all been for nothing! So be prepared for some truly hot battles.
Lockdown: Here, too, the focus is on capturing and holding tactical positions. This time, however, you have to capture three so-called “hills”. Your team has to hold them all at the same time. Then you will be credited with a point and the hills will move.
If you want to stay in the lead, you have to quickly reach the new position of the hills and start all over again. That’s the only way you’ll have a chance at the final victory.
Remake of the map “Abyss “
Abyss is a map in which you descend into mysterious depths over several levels. This whimsical map was massively reworked for the first time in Season 2. It was important to the developers to preserve the peculiarities and the “feeling” of the map.
You can clearly recognise the map, yet some massive changes were made:
- The map has a smoother and more organic look.
- Realistic water rivulets splash cheerfully through all levels of the map
- Optimised textures and lighting make everything look much better
- Maybe the most important change: There are more open areas and some portal points have been placed differently. This opens up new tactics.
If you want to get an idea of the innovations, you can see them well in the following video:
Matchmaking Reloaded
For all the success Splitgate 2021 has enjoyed one thing has often come in for criticism: matchmaking.
This caused problems in many ways. There were long queues because the servers could not cope with the rush. And then players were sometimes divided into lobbies that were too strong or too weak or were even bored with too many bots.
But all that is about to change:
- New backbone: Thanks to modern, new systems, up to one million players can now be served simultaneously.
- Intelligent System: Improved systems ideally divide you into lobbies that are also up to you.
- Fewer bots: Bots are all well and good for learning the basics, but you should now encounter fewer AI enemies in later games.
New advancement system
The previous progression system of Splitgate is changing massively. Up to level 100, you quickly reach the next level. But as soon as you reach level 100, you enter the pro level and start again at level 1 in the area “Pro 1”
This then goes up again to level 100, then you advance to the next pro level and start again at level 1. This continues until pro level 10 and until then you collect many badges, which you can then proudly present in your player card.
Other Changes
The above are the big new features of Season 2, but there’s more:
- As usual, there’s a Battlepass with over 100 items and enough in-game real money currency in it to completely fund itself if you work through it.
- The Map Creator, which came into the game in Season 1, now lets you save and share maps in a cloud. There is also a new island type called “Wet Ocean”.
- The UI has been thoroughly reworked, as you can see especially well in the lobby or in your locker.
So you see, Season 2 will be a big thing for Splitgate and not just a new Battlepass and a few small adjustments. In fact, Season 2 makes it even more worthwhile to try out the whimsical old-school shooter game for yourself!
