The Steam game wants you to roam the neighbourhood as a violence-prone squirrel and rob residents of their candy.

Squirrels are cute, but also dangerous! This is at least what a game wants to prove, which recently appeared (on Steam) and has already made a name for itself with absurd and amusing video clips. Squirrel with a Gun lets you go on a rampage through the neighbourhood as a rather ruthless rodent.

Here we explain what you actually do in the squirrel simulator and whether there might be more to it than just a gimmick. If you want to know what other absurd games there are on Steam, then be sure to check out our list:

A Squirrel Against the World

Squirrel with a gun! What crimes will it commit? That’s what the Steam description says, and it seems like that’s what the game is mostly about: We cause chaos in the neighbourhood, rob people of their smartphones or sweets at gunpoint, and mess with dangerous agents in black suits.

So Squirrel with a Gun is supposed to be primarily a sandbox that focuses on shooter aspects and exploration. Of course, the game doesn’t take itself entirely seriously, and is primarily there to amuse you as well. Just look at this cake stealing:

A special mechanic will be the weapon’s recoil: namely, it is strong enough to fling the small animal away. This allows us to jump further and even fly, so to speak. Pure realism. If we use the recoil skilfully, we can use it to avoid the attacks of enemy agents and solve parking problems. This is also shown in the trailer:

Puzzles will probably also be part of the game, for example in the trailer the squirrel turns off a force field by pressing certain switches. However, it is not yet known whether there will be an ultimate goal or whether we will just be fooling around in the end. The developer also doesn’t reveal when we can expect a release.

What do you think of Squirrel with a Gun? Would you like to try out the squirrel sandbox yourself one day, or is it enough for you to watch the funny videos? Feel free to write your opinion in the comments!
