Star Wars Outlaws: Huge sums for Early Access end in bug hell

Star Wars: Outlaws went into Early Access on August 27. On the PlayStation 5, however, the adventure is not generating galactic enthusiasm. Instead, players find themselves exposed to a game-breaking bug. Although Ubisoft has provided a remedy in the form of an update, players pay a high price for this. They have to delete their progress and start a new savegame.

Star Wars Outlaws will actually be released tomorrow, August 30th. However, anyone who has pre-ordered the Gold Edition (109.99 euros) or Ultimate Edition (129.99 euros) can already play the game from August 27. However, PlayStation gamers have not really been able to enjoy Space due to massive bugs. Specifically, these bugs mean that players get stuck in space after certain missions, such as the “False Flag” mission. They are then no longer able to land on planets, which makes it impossible to progress in the game. The situation seems particularly problematic when you consider Ubisoft’s massive marketing effort.

After the community complained loudly, Ubisoft released the update 1.000.002 yesterday. This patch is supposed to fix the emerging bugs in Star Wars Outlaws. However, in order for the patch to take full effect, the current savegame would have to be deleted and a new one started. As compensation, Ubisoft has offered affected players a “Trailblazer” trinket and 100 Ubisoft Connect Units, which can be used for in-game rewards.

A small consolation for missed Early Access

The reactions of the community are correspondingly angry. After all, they had deliberately purchased the expensive editions so that they could start playing Star Wars Outlaws before the release. Now they have to give up the progress they have made so far because Ubisoft has not fully tested its title. On Reddit, many community members refer to these gamers as “negative paid beta testers”.
Along with this, one Reddit user emphasized that the golden rule of “don’t pre-order” could no longer be adhered to. Rather, you now have to wait until the biggest bugs have been fixed before buying a game. Many commentators share this view and express the companies’ lack of respect for their buying customers.

Reviews on Metacritic for Star Wars Outlaws

A look at the reviews on Metacritic also shows a mixed picture. While some reviews praise the captivating story, the atmospheric depiction of the Star Wars world and the impressive graphics, there are also many critical voices. These criticize above all the technical problems and the immature stealth mechanics of the game. The successful characters and the exciting open-world design are highlighted on the positive side, but the technical difficulties, especially on the PS5, tarnish the gaming experience for many
