Shortly before the release, the developers of the role-playing game answer some pressing questions of the fans. We summarise the most important for you.

Starfield will be released in less than three weeks and was already presented in detail in June but many fans still had questions about the role-playing game. Yesterday, answers were given on Discord: Design Director Emil Pagliarulo and Lead Quest Designer Will Shen provided a lot of exciting new information during a Q&A session.

What’s new?

The two Starfield developers answered a total of over a dozen previously selected questions, some in detail, some briefly and concisely. We have collected the most exciting information, below there are also details on factions and quests that contain minor spoilers

  • House Purchase: We can purchase houses or flats in all major cities (New Atlantis, Akila, Neon and Cydonia). In addition, we get several residences also by completing quests. Whether and how the residences can be customised has not been clarified.
  • Our Parents: With the trait Kids Stuff we can pay a visit to our parents. Their appearance is based on that of our character. And we probably also benefit materially from this trait. (Maybe our parents will bake us cakes?)
  • Smuggling: Some goods are forbidden in the big cities of Starfield. However, we can smuggle these by installing special modules in our ship. That way they won’t be detected during inspections. Han Solo sends his regards.
  • Prisons: As in Skyrim, we can end up in prison for crimes or pay a fine. Particularly reckless crooks can of course also resist or flee from arrest.
  • Pacifist playthrough: While a completely non-violent playthrough is probably not possible, it should be possible in many quests to avoid fighting via voice challenge in dialogues.
  • Companions: There will be a total of 20 possible companions with names and backstories that can strengthen your crew, accompany you while exploring or run one of your outposts. Many of them are also involved in the main story. In addition, there are also unnamed helpers for your outposts.
(Our parents welcome us with Kids Stuff anytime at their place in New Atlantis.)

  • Stories and worldbuilding: As in previous games of the developers, the so-called environmental storytelling will play a big role. For example, we will find books that we can read or notes that tell us more about the history of a place.
  • Mechs: In a (Video) and in gameplay scenes you could spot armed mechs. These are from a war that took place before the start of the game. However, as has now been confirmed once again, we cannot use them, but only discover their remains.

    The three religions explained

At the beginning of the game we can choose as a trait to belong to one of three fictional religions. This can give us specific advantages, or also have disadvantages. The developers now also explain what their followers actually believe in:

    • Sanctum Universe: According to this religion, there is a god that can be found somewhere in the universe. Our ability to travel to new planets, therefore, brings us closer to God.
    • The Enlightened Ones: Organised atheists who believe in no higher power. Instead, they want to teach people to care for each other.
    • House Va’ruun: A mysterious and violent group whose origins are unknown to us in the game. They follow the Great Serpent, a supposedly divine being.

Caution Spoilers: Details of factions and quests

If you don’t want to know any details about the quests of Starfield, you should not read on here but leave it at the above story trailer. The developers revealed details about faction quests and very telling inspirations for their story:

    • Faction Quests: On behalf of the United Colonies, we will infiltrate the pirates of the Crimson Fleet. In the process, however, we can change our minds and actually work for Space Pirates. The developers also revealed that unlike in Skyrim, we won’t end up becoming the leader of each faction.
    • Inspiration: Emil Pagliarulo cites Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Contact, Interstellar, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Event Horizon, among others, as inspiration for some of the quests.

What do you think of the new info on Starfield? Are you looking forward to owning a cosy flat in every town? Will you try to get through the story without fighting? Or will you become a gunslinger and smuggler like Han Solo? Feel free to tell us what you think in the comments!
