The release of the hotly anticipated Bethesda role-playing game Starfield has been surprisingly postponed. All info at a glance.
One of the most anticipated role-playing games of 2022 has been postponed. Bethesda announced on Twitter that the space adventure Starfield will no longer be released in November this year as planned. In addition, the release of the planned co-op game Redfall has also been postponed to 2023.
Starfield will now not be released until 2023
In a terse statement Bethesda announces the postponement of Starfield and Redfall on Twitter. It says that both responsible development teams have “incredible ambitions” for their projects and need more time. However, gameplay for both games is to be shown soon.
There is no new release date, however, instead only committing to the first half of 2023 instead. Starfield was originally supposed to be released on the “Skyrim date”, i.e. 11.11.22. Redfall was scheduled for September 2022

“We have made the decision to delay the release of Redfall and Starfield until the first half of 2023. The teams at Arkane Austin (Redfall) and Bethesda Game Studios (Starfield) have incredible ambitions for their games and we want to make sure you get the best and most polished version of both games.
We want to thank everyone for their anticipation for Redfall and Starfield. That energy is a big part of what inspires us every day and fuels our own anticipation for what we’re making.
We can’t wait to show off our first deep dive into gameplay for Redfall and Starfield soon “
While there hasn’t been any real gameplay to see yet, the trailers have revealed a thing or two about Starfield:
Xbox boss and industry insiders speak out
Just hours after announcing the postponement, Xbox boss Phil Spencer spoke out in a Tweet saying it was a tough decision and he supports giving development teams the time they need to finish games. Of course, they are listening to feedback on the postponement and will work harder to meet fan expectations.
Insider and games journalist Jason Schreier also put out a tweet about Bethesda’s announcement:
Last spring before E3, I spoke to some folks on Starfield who were extremely worried about committing to a 11-11-22 date based on the progress they’d made so far. (“Next Cyberpunk” was the term floated.) Good on Bethesda for delaying even after announcing that specific date. https://t.co/QdWFf0zGIY

He had spoken to some developers in the spring of 2021 who were very concerned about the commitment to the November 2022 release. They would have feared becoming the next Cyberpunk. Schreier therefore believes the postponement was a good decision. He had deliberately withheld this information at the time, but now it would provide helpful context.
More than just a date
Starfield in particular is an important destiny project for Bethesda and is also likely to be instrumental in determining the future of Elder Scrolls 6:
Both Starfield and Redfall were also seen as important selling points for the Game Pass. Because with the purchase of Bethesda, Microsoft secured these two big titles for its portfolio.
Do you think the postponement was the right decision? Do you prefer to wait longer for a game in order to play it directly in the best possible condition? Would you also be willing to wait longer for a fixed release date if it could be guaranteed? Tell us in the comments!
