Wildcat Gun Machine
- Genre: Action / Dungeon Crawler
- Developer: Chunkybox Games
- Publisher: Daedalic Entertainment
- Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Switch
- PC Stores: Steam, GOG
- Release: 4 May 2022
Wildcat Gun Machine is just the game for you if you’re looking for casual action that also looks snazzy. You can choose your favourites from 40 different weapons: Do you prefer precise guns with target-seeking ammunition? Or do you prefer to rely on a good old laser beam?
With your arsenal, you’ll shoot your way through dungeons full of disgusting flesh monsters that will eat you alive. And why? Because you want to free robots from the clutches of their tormentors, of course. So far, the game has received balanced user reviews on Steam, so don’t expect a Hades rival. But you can pet cats.
Citizen Sleeper
- Genre: Roleplaying Game
- Developer: Jump Over The Age
- Publisher: Fellow Traveller
- Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch
- PC Stores: Steam, Epic, GOG, Humble, PC Game Pass
- Release: May 5, 2022
A new cyberpunk role-playing game is currently racking up dream ratings on Steam (94 percent positive!), yet almost no one knows it: Citizen Sleeper takes you to a dystopian future where unbridled capitalism has spread to the interstellar community. You are a digitally stored consciousness that is repeatedly put into a new body by an unscrupulous company in order to work. Your goal: to escape from this dreary endless loop.
What you do in your cycles on the space station, which also offers a home to many other freedom seekers, is up to you. Do you work your back off or hang out in a bar? Do you hack into the station’s secret records? Such actions are mainly text-based, but the illustrations look really nice.
Of course, your decisions influence how the story progresses, who you befriend and what future awaits the station. Note: There is unfortunately no full dubbing and so far only English texts. You can find lots of cyberpunky alternatives here:
Line War
- Genre: Realtime Strategy (Multiplayer)
- Developer: Studio Centurion
- Platforms: PC
- PC Stores: Steam
- Release: May 5, 2022
Line War is an RTS that sends you into battle against other players exclusively in PvP. It is inspired by classics such as Command & Conquer, but also by board games. A special twist is the controls: You command units by drawing lines across the battlefields. You can combine your commands into complex chains to implement multi-level strategies and surprise your opponent.
Randomly generated maps are meant to offer more variety, there are plenty of vehicles and planes and dozens of buildings to build – which of course give you certain bonuses. Line War is already very well received on Steam, with over 80 percent of reviews recommending it. And it is supposed to get even better in the future, the developers have set up a precise release plan for new features: Team matches 2-vs-2 and 3-vs-3 are to be added next, for example. However, this is not an Early Access title.
Crowns and Pawns: Kingdom of Deceit
- Genre: Adventure
- Developer: Tag of Joy
- Publisher: Thunderful Publishing
- Platforms: PC
- PC Stores: Steam, Epic, GOG
- Release: 6 May 2022
A charming adventure game with an unusual setting: In Crowns and Pawns: Kingdom of Deceit you visit modern Lithuania and other locations in Europe. You have inherited a mysterious house from your grandfather and uncover its puzzles in the best point & click manner.
Sounds a bit like the legendary Syberia, but looks a lot more colourful, with sunny streets and gardens instead of a steampunk world. But don’t be fooled by the colourful visuals, the user reviews reveal that the adventure game is by no means simple – but offers challenging puzzles like the old genre classics.
Eternal Edge+
- Genre: Action role-playing game
- Developer: Righteous Weasel Games
- Publisher: Sedoc LLC
- Platforms: PC, Switch
- PC Stores: Steam
- Release: May 8
Eternal Edge+ looks like Breath of the Wild’s little brother, wanting to be just the same, but stumbling around quite a bit in shoes that are far too big. Here, the two developers have clearly taken a lot of inspiration from Zelda in the style of the open game world, the enemies and also main character Cross. Of course, you have to be aware that this action RPG plays a few leagues below that, but it still looks charming.
Also important to know: Eternal Edge was released on Steam back in 2020, was subsequently given the Early Access label, and with a major update has now morphed into Eternal Edge+.
Salt and Sacrifice
- Genre: Action role-playing game
- Developer: Ska Studios
- Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5
- PC Stores: Epic
- Release: May 11, 2022
Salt and Sacrifice is the long-awaited sequel to fan-favourite Salt and Sanctuary, which made a name for itself as a crunchy Dark Souls alternative. In part 2, you will of course once again be challenged to prove a lot of patience and skill. Of course, you need both as a hunter of evil mages!
From the bones and flesh of your defeated enemies (yes, really) you build powerful weapons and armour, and also master dangerous rune magic for even more combat power. And if you’re up for experiencing the whole thing with a friend, Salt and Sacrifice also offers a full co-op mode.
We Were Here Forever
- Genre: Horror (Co-op)
- Developer: Total Mayhem Games
- Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Seriex X/S
- PC Stores: Steam, Epic
- Release: 10 May 2022
Rude Awakening: You open your eyes and find yourself trapped in a dark castle. How did you get here? And more importantly, which way is the way out? Fortunately, you don’t have to find out alone, but have a co-op partner at your side with whom you can bravely face the creepy puzzles. Or run away screaming, we won’t judge.
If you’re a fan of the three predecessors or are into escape games and co-op puzzles in general, then you should definitely put We Were Here Forever on your wishlist!
Source of Madness
- Genre: Action
- Developer: Carry Castle
- Publisher: Thunderful Publishing
- Platforms: PC
- PC Stores: Steam
- Release: May 11, 2022 (Final Release)
Source of Madness already has a small fan club, as the 2D action game has been in Early Access on Steam since September 2021. On 11 May, it will leave this phase behind and be released as a finished full version. If you’re craving pure Lovecraft atmosphere, then make room on your wish list!
Here you will face horrible monsters, which are the result of feeding an AI with Lovecraft elements. The murderous creatures are procedurally generated and even their special movements are automatically animated. So you never know exactly what cosmic horror is lurking in the next section of the Roguelite.
Get-A-Grip Chip and the Body Bugs
- Genre: Action
- Developer: Redstart Interactive
- Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Switch
- PC Stores: Steam
- Release: May 12, 2022
Do you know the anime Cells at Work? No? You should catch up! But that’s not really what this is about, it’s about Get-A-Grip Chip and the Body Bugs, which has a very similar setting. In this action game you are inside a human body, more precisely in a digestive system. And you are supposed to whip it into shape.
You are Chip, a synthetic white blood cell, enemy of all germs and protector of the bodily fluids. With your grasping arms you swing through veins and organs, always on the lookout for the evil body bugs. When you’re not fighting the unwanted invaders to the bitter end, you’re racing against friendly cells.
Cantata
- Genre: Strategy
- Developer: Afterschool Studio
- Publisher: Modern Wolf
- Platforms: PC
- PC Stores: Steam
- Release: May 12 (Early Access)
Humans vs. machines vs. aliens: In Cantata you get into a bitter conflict as old as the sci-fi genre. You choose one of the three factions, explore the resources of an alien planet and – of course – build a powerful base. You should pay special attention to your supply lines, because they are a nasty weak point that enemies can exploit.
First of all, Early Access is starting on Steam, which contains the first three of a total of nine chapters of the solo campaign. You can already create your own maps and scenarios, and the full version will include additional features and the rest of the campaign. There is no exact release date yet, but it should be ready in about a year’s time.
Achilles: Legends Untold
- Genre: Action role-playing game
- Developer: Dark Point Games
- Platforms: PC
- PC Stores: Steam
- Release: May 12 (Early Access)
Titan Quest lives and it’s now called Achilles: Legends Untold! Okay, that would be putting it a bit unfairly, the action role-playing game offers a similar but own setting and also contains a healthy portion of Soulslike. But it is strongly inspired by the spirit of the old classics, including Diablo, of course. You are the young hero Achilles on your way through ancient Greece, where you get caught up in the conflict between the gods Hades and Ares.
From the iso-perspective, you fight a multitude of enemies, procure better equipment from the smith god Hephaistos and level up your character in RPG style. You experience the story alone, but in dungeons you can call on a co-op partner for help. The Patroklos to your Achilles, so to speak.
There is still a lot to be done before the final release: Three more chapters will be added to the initial two (and two different story endings), 4-player co-op will be possible, more weapons, more enemies and so on. A release date has not yet been set, but at least it has been narrowed down – it is supposed to be in the 3rd quarter of 2023.
Achilles: Legends Untold in review – Alas, not a new Titan Quest
V Rising
- Genre: Action
- Developer: Stunlock Studios
- Platforms: PC
- PC Stores: Steam
- Release: May 17
From Mighty Demon of the Night: In V Rising you wake up as a starved and weakened vampire and must first fight for your undead life. As if the arduous hunt for mortal blood wasn’t stressful enough, there are also soldiers who want to kill you with holy water. And then there are even more dangerous creatures than vampires lurking in the shadows.
In the daylight you don’t glitter, but burn to ashes, so you have to play hide and seek! In return, you can build your own vampire castle and raise your own army there. In V Rising, you can also form alliances with other players to survive together and search dark dungeons for valuable resources. Of course, you can also attack each other with fangs, magic and weapons instead.
Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong
- Genre: Role Playing Game
- Developer: Big Bad Wolf
- Publisher: Nacon
- Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch
- PC Stores: Epic
- Release: May 19
Bloodlines 2 is stuck deep in the ground, but vampire fans can still look forward to role-playing game updates! Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong is an unusual vampire game that reminds us a little of Disco Elysium. As in the best story game ever, fights play a subordinate role in Swansong. Instead, dialogue, puzzles and exploration drive the story.
You control one of three possible protagonists through the World of Darkness, all of whom have their own abilities – such as being able to manipulate the minds of their enemies. Your skills determine what you can discover and do, for example, an inattentive vampire may miss important clues.
Diablo cousin or survival game? That’s what’s behind V Rising – and why it’s so exciting
Eternal Threads
- Genre: Adventure
- Developer: Cosmonaut Studios
- Publisher: Secret Mode
- Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
- PC Stores: Steam
- Release: May 19
In 2015, six people die in a house fire. You are sent back in time to prevent the disaster – but you are not allowed to intervene directly in the events, only subtly manipulate those involved to survive the fire. Eternal Threads is an adventure game that takes the “what if” question to the extreme.
You choose how to affect the lives of the house’s inhabitants for seven days and then see the consequences of that, both desired and unexpected. If you want to take a look at the game principle with its many decisions and timelines without obligation: There’s a free demo available on Steam.
The Black Eye- Forgotten Fables: Wolves on the Westwind
- Genre: Visual Novel
- Developer: Owned by Gravity, Ulisses Digital
- Publisher: Ulisses Digital
- Platforms: PC
- PC Stores: Steam
- Release: May 25
DSA and Viking fans take note: Wolves on the Westwind is set in the pen&paper world of Aventuria, more precisely in the north of the continent. Finally we travel to Thorwal! This region is reminiscent of a fantasy version of Scandinavia, with wild nature and intrepid seafarers. As one of two playable characters, you experience an adventure around the Ottajasko (ship crew) Wolves on the Westwind in the visual novel.
Jan Wagner from Ulisses Games recently revealed to us that Wolves on the Westwind is only the first step on the way back into the spotlight for the DSA franchise.
My Time at Sandrock
- Genre: Role Playing Sandbox
- Developer: Pathea Games
- Platforms: PC
- PC Stores: Steam
- Release: May 26 (Early Access)
My Time at Portia is probably a household name to any savvy sandbox fan by now. The successor My Time at Sandrock now continues the colourful post-apocalypse in Early Access. As the name suggests, this time we find ourselves in the desert, where we can let off steam in peace after the end of the old civilisation. Our goal is to set up a smooth-running workshop and then trade with the inhabitants of Sandrock.
In between, we’ll explore desert ruins, beat up monsters, meet over 30 new NPCs and complete hundreds of side quests. The full content will be gradually added over the course of the next year, but there is no exact date for the final release yet. With My Time at Portia, however, the developers have earned a good portion of advance trust from the fans.
Unexplored 2: The Wayfarer’s Legacy
- Genre: Action Role-Playing Game
- Developer: Ludomotion
- Publisher: Big Sugar
- Platforms: PC, Xbox One
- PC Stores: Steam, Epic
- Release: May 27 (Final Release)
The sequel to Unexplored has been in Early Access with Epic since 2021 and is now finally coming to Steam. Unexplored 2 sends you through a vast (and quite pretty) open overworld instead of dungeons, so you have more to explore and puzzle over.
As befits a roguelike, your hero dies from time to time, but here the game brings an exciting twist: The state of the world is not reset. Your successor can, for example, find items that your last character hid in the world. So it’s best to start thinking about the future right away! Or you can start a completely new round that randomly generates a completely different world – just as you like.
Do you have any insider tips on your radar that will be released in May 2022 and that you would like to share with the world? Then feel free to write them down in the comments! We’re always happy to receive your tips.
