The gaming year 2023 is already in full swing – but some big fish are still waiting for us. And the exciting announcements for 2024 are already piling up. But which games are actually the most hotly anticipated?

A good indicator of this is the Steam wish list. Here you can find out which games are currently on most wish lists. There are some clear highlights, but also a few surprises. Maybe there”s something you”d like to add to your list. Have fun browsing!

Place 15: Palworld

Why hotly anticipated? Many PC gamers have been waiting for a proper PC alternative to Pokémon for ages. But the open-world role-playing game Palworld could be even more than that, letting players slaughter and eat their captured creatures in secret or work them to exhaustion on an assembly line.

Palworld thus offers a much darker level than the Nintendo hit, alongside classic Pokémon virtues such as catching and levelling creatures. Friends can also be brought in for co-op to explore the world together.

Place 14: Nightingale

Why hotly anticipated? Survival, open world, a Victorian setting and former Bioware developers – with these hot selling points Nightingale has cheated its way straight into the hearts of fans and, on top of that, right to the top of many Steam wishlists.

Place 13: Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty

Why hotly anticipated? Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is the new game from the Nioh makers, making it a hot new contender for those in need of a fresh dose of Souls after finishing Elden Ring. Wo Long sends players to ancient China at the time of the Han Dynasty and mixes it all up with a massive dash of mythology.

Place 12: Payday 3

Why hotly anticipated? What could be better than robbing banks and chasing the big money together with your favourite clown gang? Not much, if fans of the Payday series have their way, which is why many have been eagerly awaiting the release of Payday 3 for years.

After a shaky development history and long radio silence, 2023 is finally set as the release year, catapulting the co-op shooter back to the top of many wish lists.

Place 11: Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2

Why hotly anticipated? The role-playing game Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines is a true classic in the history of role-playing games. The cult game had to struggle with numerous bugs and never achieved the desired financial success – because it shared its release day with, of all things, Half-Life 2. But today it is considered a must for role-playing game fans because of its grandiose vampire story and freedom of choice.

The then surprisingly announced second part seems to have suffered some of the curse of its predecessor, because also Bloodlines 2 looks back on a chaotic development and recently lost its entire development team.

Place 10: Hades 2

Why hotly anticipated? How do you continue a game as good as Hades? How to add something to the formula that already lacked little in the first part? This is the challenge now facing the developers of the action role-playing game set in Greek mythology, which can hardly save itself from awards and prizes.

Fest stands: Hades 2 will continue the story of the first part and will shine with numerous new characters as well as a new heroine.

Place 9: The Last of Us Part 1

Why hotly anticipated? While we PC gamers had to look longingly at numerous great PlayStation-exclusive games a few years ago, more and more big hits are now coming to the PC as remakes and remasters – including The Last of Us Part 1, which has not only been polished up graphically, but will soon finally be available to all fans of the “mouse and keyboard” fraction.

In view of the success of the current series, the interest in the game should have skyrocketed once again.

Place 8: Ark 2

Why hotly anticipated? Ark is one of the biggest and most important MMOs in the survival genre. No wonder, then, that the planned sequel starring Vin Diesel is on the wish list of many survival fans. Ark 2 is to be set after the events of the DLC Genesis: Part 2 and take place on an Earth-like planet.

Place 7: Frostpunk 2

Why hotly anticipated? With Frostpunk 2 the sequel to arguably the best building game from 2018 awaits us in 2023 (hopefully!). At the time, Frostpunk offered a unique mix of survival, building, and heavy story choices in a dystopian future in the midst of a new ice age.

Here again you will be drawn into a bleak and above all cold vision of the future, where a single human life is not worth much when the survival of the entire colony is at stake. According to the developers, Frostpunk 2 will be bigger and better than its predecessor in all respects – sounds vague at first, but some details are already known:

Place 6: Stalker 2: Heart of Chernobyl

Why hotly anticipated? At the time, the cult shooter Stalker stood for one thing above all: terrific graphics. In 2022 years later, of course, we understand this to mean something different – and yet the sequel Stalker 2 seems to effortlessly fulfil the visual expectations.

Place 5: Manor Lords

Why hotly anticipated? The building game with real-time knight battles serves an enormous number of medieval dreams. You build up quite realistic villages and are later also allowed to act as a commander in real-time battles reminiscent of Total War. Manor Lords also looks incredibly beautiful.

Place 4: Hollow Knight: Silksong

Why hotly anticipated? The first Hollow Knight was a real surprise hit and is now considered one of THE cult games of the genre. The hard-hitting Metroidvania with its chic hand-drawn style sold over a million copies after just a few months and left fans wanting more.

And now people are impatiently waiting for the sequel Hollow Knight: Silksong. An exact release date is still waiting, but there are already some details about the new part.

Place 3: Party Animals

Why hotly anticipated? A physics-based action title with online and local multiplayer? You can probably guess why this game made it almost to the top of the Steam wishlist: It”s the endless co-op party fun that hits like Mario Party or Overcooked also have to offer. Here, cute little dogs, kittens or bunnies give each other a good kicking. If that”s not enough, you can grab a weapon or use the environment for mischief.

Place 2: Dark and Darker

Why hotly anticipated? For many people, normal role-playing games just don”t seem to be enough anymore – it has to offer the hardcore PvP of Dark and Darker already! Since the Steam Next Fest demo, the dark fantasy game has been at the top of the wish list of many dungeon crawler fans.

Place 1: Starfield

Why hotly anticipated? That Bethesda”s first major single-player role-playing game in seven years is gathering something of a following should come as no surprise. And after the big Xbox-Bethesda Showcase 2022, in which 15 minutes of gameplay of Starfield were shown for the first time, the interest has once again increased drastically.
