Stellaris introduces the new addon Overlord, which is intended to further deepen the playful complexity of the 4X strategy game.
It’s been another year since the last big Stellaris expansion. And developer Paradox is apparently not finished with the 4X strategy game even after six years full of innovations. This is now proven by the announcement of the Overlord DLC.
The new add-on for Stellaris gives you mechanics to rule your galaxy as emperor, to control your vassals like puppets or even to become a little light on the big chandelier yourself. Because gameplay as a submissive vassal of a powerful AI emperor is also to become a valid option.
This will make Stellaris even more multi-layered than it has already become in recent years with Federations and Nemesis:
You can take minions under gag contracts in the Overlord DLC, assigning them specialised tasks in pursuit of your greater goals. However, as benevolent players, you also get to play good Samaritan by designing a sort of irenic empire that brings peace and prosperity to all species.
Complementing the mechanics are new megastructures designed to increase your influence and reach to truly take the entire galaxy under your caring wing. Or you can become a vassal yourself and let yourself be ruled, as this option is also intended to deepen Overlord. Exactly how all this will take shape and what the gigantic buildings will do in detail has not yet been communicated.
A release date is also still missing. The hope: So far, Stellaris often got its add-ons shortly after they were announced. Only time will tell if this will also be the case for Overlord. After all, there is already a (Steam page) with the hint Coming soon. We will of course keep you up to date.

Stellaris’ path to 4X heavyweight status
4X expert Paradox rose to prominence among global strategists primarily with the Europa Universalis and Hearts of Iron game series. The foray into space with Stellaris was still accompanied by much criticism at the time of its release in 2016, as the package was meagre in terms of content and unsatisfactorily balanced.
However, this has changed in the meantime, even if the release of several paid DLCs, species packages and complex expansions has also led to criticism. After all, the Ultimate Bundle with all the add-ons costs an impressive 200 euros. At least there were always free updates with many improvements on top of that.
