Strong reviews show: Open-world novelty Tchia is at least worth a look

The international reviews of Tchia are quite positive – but not all testers are enthusiastic on Metacritic. We summarise the opinions on the sandbox game

The upcoming adventure Tchia has already managed to awaken holiday feelings in the trailers. The open-world sandbox is set on a South Pacific archipelago and could hardly look more idyllic. But it is not only the graphic style that is convincing; some international reviews also sing general praises. Others, however, criticise gameplay weaknesses.

We play the eponymous girl Tchia, who wants to free her kidnapped dad again. Of course, the kidnapper is also terrorising the entire island, so there are more than enough reasons to rebel against him. The ability to put Tchia”s soul into any animal and almost any object and thus control it is, of course, extremely useful.

Tchia is released today, i.e. on 21 March 2023 for the PC and the two PlayStation consoles.

On MetaCritic, the PC version of Tchia has managed (to 78 points), on the PlayStation it is one point more. Apart from one extremely negative review, however, the picture so far is positive.

What the testers say about Tchia

WellPlayed author Mark Isaacson speaks highly of Tchia, even mouthing the words Game of the Year

Thia”s ambitious ideas and bright open world blend together harmoniously. Despite the touch of familiarity, there is simply nothing like Tchia and I”m sure it will be high on my list of games of the year.

PC Gamer editor Christopher Livingston is also excited about the game and sums up his conclusion succinctly:

One of the best open-world games in ages.

Our colleagues at GamePro also have a lot to like about Tchia, writer Linda Sprenger writes:

A heartwarming open-world adventure with lots of black humour and plenty of surprises.

Hardcore Gamer, on the other hand, has a few criticisms to offer:

Tchia is a great ode to New Caledonia [the South Pacific archipelago] that is unfortunately hampered by a bloated and standard open-world design that tries to do too much. Even if the gameplay isn”t overly original, there”s still fun to be had, with genuinely impressive locations and sounds that make exploring the archipelago delightful every now and then. Just try to maintain some focus as you navigate your way through the numerous distractions, and you”ll have a pretty impressive trip.

GameGrin, with a score of just 35, can”t put much stock in the game:

The most annoying thing about Tchia is that the very few fun moments are incredible, so you can see exactly how great the title could have been if there weren”t so many missing elements.

Did you have Tchia on your radar or did you just become aware of the game? And will you take a closer look at the game after these ratings or do the setting and graphic style leave you cold? Which open-world game are you more excited about this year? Feel free to let us know in the comments!
