The black hole grows: Helldivers 2 is heading for the next disaster

The growing black hole in Helldivers 2 could cause even more intergalactic thrills.

It’s a damn dangerous time to be a Helldiver: while Super Earth’s loyal soldiers are trying to rid the galaxy of bugs, machines, and Illuminate, the next cosmic drama is already brewing.

The black hole where the planet Meridia used to be is beginning to change in a disturbing way – and the consequences could be galactic.

What is the deal with this black hole?

A brief recap: The story begins with the Terminids, the ever-popular alien beetles in a Starship Troopers style. This enemy faction captivated so many players that Arrowhead brought it to the fore with a spectacular twist: the revelation that the unassuming planet of Meridia in Terminid territory was actually a massive supercolony.

In a dramatic limited-time mission, the Helldivers had to flood Meridia with black matter to create a gigantic singularity and eliminate the threat. The plan worked – Meridia became a black hole. But as the saying goes, you have to expect the consequences of playing with fire.

The awakening of the black hole

Initially, the newly formed singularity seemed stable. But now some Helldivers are reporting strange changes. The once inconspicuous black hole has changed color, radiating an ominous violet glow and pulling debris into itself at an alarming rate:

And as if that wasn’t enough, a new threat suddenly emerged: the Illuminate. These mysterious, bio-organic beings – mockingly referred to by many as Squids – have not claimed a fixed space in the universe. Instead, they attack Super-Earth worlds suddenly and deliberately.

The first battle on Calypso was a close call. The Helldivers were only able to defend the planet with their last ounce of strength before the Illuminate retreated – we provide you with a glimpse here:

But their attacks have a pattern that clearly points to Meridia. Could the growing black hole and the Illuminate’s activities be connected? The signs point to it.

Most recently, the Helldivers had to defend themselves against the Illuminate in a large-scale operation. Ironically, this happened in Terminid territory of all places – the old arch-enemy, who suddenly became a reluctant ally thanks to the new threat. The Illuminate were successfully repelled, but their return is probably only a matter of time.
