The end times in Terminator still seem friendly compared to this new survival shooter

The post-apocalypse has rarely been as bleak as in the new loot and co-op shooter The Forever Winter

“You’re just a small fish in a big apocalypse,” The Forever Winter tells us on its Steam page immediately.

For once, the newly announced shooter from US developer Fun Dog Studios doesn’t turn us into super soldiers who single-handedly save the world, but into a tiny side note in a merciless warthat we can neither win nor lose.

Survival in the AI war

The world of The Forever Winter is hopelessly broken and irredeemably lost: In the distant future, fully automated war machines have taken complete control of their own craft. Did someone say Skynet?

Fully autonomous AI wages a never-ending campaign against each other. Deadly drones, killer cyborgs and house-sized mechs engage in pointless battles and are then reproduced in a cycle of destruction.

The special thing: As players, we are not on either side of this conflict, but are among the last surviving humans. Our job is to find loot and avoid getting caught between the fronts! The trailer is intended to convey the nerve-wracking atmosphere:

An enemy with a brain and a plan

Where and when we start shooting needs to be carefully considered. Because once the machinery of war takes notice of us, we quickly find ourselves confronted by a superior force

According to the developer, stealth, teamwork and clever tactics&nbspare required if we want to achieve our goals and escape with our loot.

The so-called “Dynamic Encouter System” of The Forever Winter, which the makers describe as follows, is said to be a special attraction:

The battlefield is unpredictable, enemies have their own goals and intentions. They operate in coordinated groups, plan their attacks independently and react intelligently to the players’ actions.

Developers previously worked on Horizon Zero Dawn

There is no release date for The Forever Winter yet, nor are there any further details about the gameplay. But if you have a weakness for end-time scenarios and the Terminator aesthetic, you should keep an eye on this title

The developer Fun Dog Studios claims to be made up of around 30 industry veterans with decades of AAA experience – including Mass Effect and Doom Eternal. Founder and CEO Miles Williams was previously Art Director for Horizon Zero Dawn and Star Citizen.
