The studio SureAI became known through the Skyrim mod Enderal. With their new game, the developers are now venturing into a completely different genre.
Enderal should be a familiar name to many gamers in Germany. Under the name SureAI, a team developed the Total Conversion for Skyrim (and previously also for Oblivion), which caused a stir with its outstanding story.
After the success of Enderal, SureAI also set out to independently develop entirely new games. Now, with Dreadful River, another title has been announced that strays far from its role-playing game roots.
What is Dreadful River?
In Dreadful River you travel down a river on a raft. What sounds idyllic at first, however, is anything but a peaceful journey. Again and again, enemies lie in wait to attack you: be it wizards, archers or spear throwers. You must choose your battles wisely and defend your vehicle skilfully. Because if your team dies, you start the game all over again.
So that the roguelike does not become boring, the course of the river and the places and enemies encountered are to change with each run. In addition, there are weather effects and a day and night cycle. During your journey, you can also hire new crew members of different classes and strengthen your boat. You also collect useful items from defeated enemies. This should improve your chances of survival.
In addition to combat, exploration will also play a role. So you discover mysteries
on the banks of the river. But they are probably not part of the Early Access version from the beginning.
When will the game be released?
Dreadful River is scheduled for release in Early Access in late 2022 and had been in development for more than a year before that. Until the release of the full version, which is planned after another year, a lot is supposed to happen. The game is to be expanded with many new contents and features, such as:
- Additional friends and enemies, new variations of enemies as well as factions.
- New water hazards and upgrades, more items to find and buy.
- Landings along the shore to explore mysterious locations
- Introduction of seasons that bring new challenges
- Branching river routes and more environments
- Settlements and towns where you will receive quests
While Dreadful River is nearing release, by the way, there is another unannounced project in development at SureAI. I wonder what that will be?
What do you think of Dreadful River after a first look? Do you want to know more about the game or do you not like roguelikes at all? Feel free to post your thoughts in the comments!
