The remake of Mortal Kombat was well received by fans. The same cannot be said, however, for the new character Cole Young.

On October 23, 202523, the fists will fly again when Mortal Kombat 2 opens in theaters. This time, the eponymous tournament, which was still a long time coming in the first film, will finally take place.

And in doing so, a few fighters also enter the ring that fans had also missed in the first part. For example Johnny Cage (Karl Urban), Kitana (Adeline Rudolph) and the big villain Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford).

The three newcomers (and also Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion) have now been released first official pictures, which are of course already being discussed among fans of Mortal Kombat.

What fans think of the first pictures of MK2

For example, there is no real consensus on the look of Shao Kahn. While some fans see him as badass and appropriately menacing, others find the mask a little too contrived and even cheap.

But now Karl Urban (The Boys) seems to be getting a little more love as Johnny Cage. The casting of the 52-year-old actor as a professional actor and martial artist was criticized mainly because of Urban’s age. However, the opinion is now spreading that this fits a washed-up version of Johnny, who has long since seen his best years and does not really want to admit it.

But there is one thing that many Mortal Kombat fans definitely agree on: Cole Young (Lewis Tan) is not missing from the first pictures of the new movie – even though, or perhaps because, he is the main character from part 1.

To this day, many viewers have not been able to warm to Cole Young, a character invented especially for the Mortal Kombat remake. (To be fair, new characters for video games are always viewed with particular suspicion.)

Cole Young has not been able to convince many fans of himself to this day.– for example, he is accused of being too pale and boring as the central main character and of his superpower literally consisting of Plot Armour

The dislike for Cole Young is now making itself felt in the corresponding discussions on Reddit. These commentators will probably be pleased to hear that his role in Mortal Kombat 2 is reportedly and has actually been reduced:

  • No Cole Young in sight… they know very well how little he is likedEfficient-Ad2983
  • …] The first movie was fun, but I hope they relegate the main character to the bench. Cole Young was just not a well-made protagonist […].riegspsych325
  • Personally, I liked the first Mortal Kombat and I didn’t have a problem with Cole. But I still hope that he appears more as a supporting character and leaves the spotlight to Johnny.just_really_boerd
  • What do you think: What are the chances that Cole will be killed in the first scene to show how dicey the situation is? (And also to get rid of him, because nobody liked him.)– –Ashpolt

Mortal Kombat 2 starts in German cinemas on October 23, 2025. The first film received little mercy from critics, but has a solid following among many viewers and fans of the video games.

Worldwide, Mortal Kombat grossed $185 million. With a budget of $55 million, that sounds disastrous, but it was still a decent result in the midst of the Corona pandemic.
