Have you always wanted to visit the Corsairs of Umbar? In the Middle-earth MMO, that will be possible very soon.

For long-time fans of The Lord of the Rings Online it has become almost a tradition: Just about every year, a paid addon is released sometime in November. And 2023 is no exception in this respect.
With The Corsairs of Umbar this year’s expansion will be released on 1 November. As the name suggests, the southern lands of the Tolkien saga world will be on display for the first time. As of now, you can pre-order (the addon).

A whole new side of Middle-earth

Now well, restrictively one must add: Of course, Umbar, Harad and Co. have already been implemented in video games, but so far these have been fan projects such as (Minecraft Middle Earth) or total conversion mods for the Total War strategy games.

But since The Lord of the Rings Online is an officially licensed game, the upcoming Umbar is nevertheless a first in some respects. For the first time in many years, fans of the veteran MMORPG can expect brand new biomes that are supposed to be strongly based on African countries in terms of flora and fauna.

The official announcement trailer offers you a first taste:

What’s the price? The basic version of the addon costs 37 Euros and includes the addon, the instance group that will be released at a later date and the seafarer class that is already available in the game.

The basic version of the addon costs 37 Euros and includes the instance group that will be released at a later date and the seafarer class that is already available in the game.

For 73 euros, the collector’s edition comes with a whole pile of extras such as ornamental companions, bonus items and more. The “ultimate fan bundle” comes in at a hefty 120 euros and then goes one better in terms of extras.

What’s inside? In terms of scope, fans of the heavily aged MMO shouldn’t get bored any time soon:

  • Over 350 new quests and 85 deeds
  • Ten new character levels (new maximum level: 150)
  • Five new areas (West Gondor, Outer Gondor, the Shield Isles, Cape of Umbar, City of Umbar)
  • New class: the navigator (already available in the game)

What’s it about? The plot of the main quest picks up where the last free update left off: At the command of the newly crowned King Elessar, players must assemble a motley crew of old friends and new allies and uncover a conspiracy on the foreign shores of Umbar that could pose a threat to the newly revived kingdom of Gondor.

Not quite as fresh but still interesting is the packed info package on The Lord of the Rings Online that our Tolkien expert Sören has put together for you over the last few years.

Have you ever given The Lord of the Rings Online a chance? Or is the MMO just too outdated for you to have fun with it after all these years?
