The role-playing game Ravenbound was announced at gamescom. As a messenger of the gods, you travel through a dark fantasy world and kill monsters.

In the first few days, gamescom 2022 is already rolling out some exciting announcements and new trailers. First there was a lot of new stuff to see at the Opening Night Live on Tuesday and on Wednesday it continued with the Future Games Show. Yesterday we also got to see a first trailer for Ravenbound, an action role-playing game with a pretty open world that is to be released soon. You can find out how it will play and what special features it will offer us here.

The first trailer already hints at what we are getting into in Ravenbound: We are sent to the Norse myth-inspired world of Ávalt as a vessel for a powerful weapon created by ancient gods. Our task is to free the land from dark forces. And there seem to be quite a few of them: In the trailer and screenshots we see draugr, trolls, witches, forest spirits and more.

How does it play?

Challenging battles: Obviously, the open world of Ravenbound is less about exploring and completing quests, but more about crunchy battles, which we probably fight exclusively in close combat. We fight against individual enemies, but also against whole hordes. Dodging is also very important, because blocking a troll”s huge fist with a sword or shield is certainly not a good idea.

Every death changes the game: When we die, the current character is lost forever. However, we pass on learned skills to the next soul host who continues our journey. In addition, only death allows us to access the deck-building feature. Here we choose stronger cards each time for the next run, which decide your equipment, weapons and magic. So, roguelike-style, we get stronger and stronger until we eventually make it to the end of the game.

The best games of gamescom

What do you think of Ravenbound? Do you like the dark fantasy world with Nordic touches? Do you just like playing roguelike games? Or does the title leave you rather cold, because you don”t want to start over every time you die? Feel free to write your opinion in the comments!
