The Sims 5 Release

When will The Sims 5 be released and will it really have multiplayer? We put all the rumours and info about the new Sims part in order for you.

If you’ve landed on this article, then you’re probably eagerly awaiting the big announcement of The Sims 5 – and still have some questions. For example, when you can expect the new Sims part or whether the life simulation really gets a multiplayer.

Then you’ve come to the right place! We have collected all known information about The Sims 5 for you and put it in order: How likely are the rumours about the online mode, multiplayer, engine and release?

Release: When will The Sims 5 be released and when will it be announced?

At the outset, The Sims 5 does not have an official release date at this time. There were speculations that The Sims 5 could be announced at the EA Play Event 2021 or gamescom – but they turned out to be wrong. Since The Sims 4 has only recently received new add-ons, an announcement of the successor in 2021 no longer seems too likely.

However, if The Sims 5 is indeed announced in 2021, a release in 2022 is absolutely possible. The predecessor The Sims 4 was announced at gamescom in August 2013 and was released just one year later in September 2014.

Multiplayer: Will The Sims 5 take place online and get a subscription?

One of the most persistent rumours about The Sims 5 is a planned multiplayer mode. This rumour goes back to an investor meeting with EA CEO Andrew Wilson. In it, he talked about the possibility of online features being firmly integrated into the future of the Sims series.

Various job advertisements at Sims developer Maxis for “a future new Sims title” backed up this fact. The advertisement for a Game Developer was looking for someone with “experience and enthusiasm in implementing distribution models such as subscription services”. In addition, a request for a software engineer capable of developing “extremely scalable and reliable web services that support millions of players. ”

Already The Sims 4 offers small online aspects with features like the library though. So the job ads don’t necessarily have to point to a The Sims Online-style MMO. According to CEO Andrew Wilson, the main motivation of Sims still lies in “inspiration, creation and self-improvement rather than social interaction and competition. ”

Engine: In which engine is The Sims 5 being developed?

Job postings at Sims developer Maxis have long been a reliable source of planned features. Postings for Software Engineers revealed that “much of the work will likely take place in the Unreal Engine.”

But does that mean The Sims 5 will be developed in Unreal Engine 5? Rather unlikely. Until now, EA relied on a separate engine for each Sims part – so it’s possible that the Unreal Engine will only be used for prototyping purposes. Earlier Sims 4 prototypes were also created in the Unity Engine, for example.

This early prototype of The Sims 4 was created in the Unity Engine and later released by studio art director Chi Chan.

The Sims 4: What’s next for the current installment?

There seems to be no end in sight for The Sims 4 at the moment. On the contrary: Another big add-on, Country House Life, has just been released, which fans have been eagerly awaiting for a long time. And the new mini-DLCs are also being diligently developed by EA (by the way, we think the 5-euro add-ons are problematic – but also a hint in the direction of The Sims 5). Until the release of The Sims 5, fans can expect a lot of new content for the current part.
