What is Once Human anyway? Once Human is a newly released free-2-play survival game with sandbox gameplay from developer Starry Studio. The release was on July 09, 2024 on Steam. The demo was already a great success with fans of the survival genre and the release date was eagerly awaited.

Together or against other players, survival in a post-apocalyptic world is at stake. This time, however, the apocalypse is not the usual stuff à la zombies, viruses, climate collapse or nuclear war

In fact, an alien substance called Stardust has turned most living creatures on our planet into monsters, but also gives them supernatural powers. So you encounter extremely crazy things in the game and your character is – as the name of the game suggests – no longer quite human.

Is Only Human Pay2Win?

You can download and play Once Human for free on Steam. Of course, there is an in-game store where you can spend real money. But those who fear Pay2Win can rest assured. There are only purely cosmetic purchases, the in-game store only offers skins

Equipment can only be obtained through effort in the game, with rare gold tier items being obtained through continuous play. Weapon blueprints can only be obtained through in-game gacha draws, with gacha items only acquired through active participation in the game and not through direct purchases.

You can get your pets in Once Human by exploring the open world without having to spend real money.

These 4 features of Once Human are not to be missed by survival fans

Survival games in open worlds have a lot in common. You start virtually naked and have to laboriously fumble together even the most primitive basics of life

(Whether together against monsters or other players in PvP: Action is the order of the day in Once Human.)

But apart from these basics, Once Human offers a few wacky and original innovations that turn the genre on its head.

The world is totally crazy

In Once Human you don’t get your run-of-the-mill apocalypse. Because the world has not only ended in its familiar form, it has changed massively. Nothing is as it was. That’s why, among other things, weird people are running around with a TV screen between their shoulders instead of a head

Experience great graphics

A good game also needs an immersive atmosphere that captivates you and draws you straight into the action. Once Human achieves this masterfully, as the game’s graphics and visual effects are state of the art and promise a high level of immersion

Other creatures are monster school buses, llamas with sunglasses, little men made of paper or truly gigantic cats! You can also win these so-called “deviations” as pets, but more on that later

Also noteworthy: The setting of Once Human is not a dreary, grey wasteland, but a colorful, diverse and lively world in which you will also find idyllic houses and gardens. So if you’re looking for a change from the usual genre monotony, you’ll definitely find it here.

This becomes particularly clear when the wacky and crazy things that the Stardust triggers come to fruition. You’ll probably never forget the moment when a giant bus suddenly rises up on disgusting human hands and starts attacking you

Giant open world full of possibilities

The world of Once Human is full of dangers and enemies. But in addition to the battles, you are offered various survival features to enhance your fight for survival:

  • You build your own base and can even pack it onto a pick-up truck and drive it around.
  • Explore the surroundings and find more and more valuable resources. You can then use them to build previously unimagined structures and unlock functions
  • Hunting and fishing are also possible; search the open world for good hunting and fishing grounds.
  • To unlock special rewards and abilities, look out for anomalies and use them.
  • If you’re too lazy to walk, you can whizz through the botany on a motorcycle.

(The beautiful and sometimes scary world of Once Human is gigantic and offers plenty of room to explore.)

This all works particularly well in a team and together you build better and can then relax together, dance or take funny selfies with hunted prey.

Special, wacky pets

Together with human players, you can also gain the aforementioned Deviations as allies. These “pets” will then mine materials for you or take care of your crops.

(In your base one of your pets will cook for you, here a huge plush dino thingy).

But that’s not all, you can also have the pets cook and clean for you, cuddle up with them in bed or have a proper party with them

The pets are not just helpful party animals. These creatures also show what they are made of in battle. So when the going gets tough, the Deviations really let rip and smash your opponents into the ground. All these features ensure that Once Human is great fun for all survival fans.Download Once Human today from Steam, Epic or the homepage and get started. After all, it’s completely free!
