There hasn’t been a proper game in the Matrix universe since 2005. Now a mod for the martial arts hit Sifu fills this gap.
From the end of the 90s, the Matrix films not only caused leather coat sales to explode. No, they also fascinated us with their perfectly choreographed hand-to-hand fights and the question of whether we would notice if our reality was actually just an amazingly real computer simulation.
All the more unfortunate that this question only made it onto our computer screens three times and that these appearances consisted of two mediocre action games and a short-lived MMO. Some fans of the films no longer wanted to put up with this state of affairs and unceremoniously turned the brawling hit Sifu into a Matrix game.
Sifu in test: Sifu’s martial arts combat is among the best I have ever played.
Do you hear that, Mr. Anderson?
No sooner had the modder Halfmiliz released his Neo-Mod on (Nexus) than the response from the community was so great that he added three more to it in the following weeks, including one for the battle sounds familiar from the films. In the meantime, they form “The Matrix Mods Pack” together with the work of a second hobbyist.
In it, you fight as Neo in his iconic Chosen One outfit (including the physically correct waving end of the coat) against countless Agent Smiths. A reshade provides the typical green colour filter and even the UI has been adapted to the style of the films.
The levels remain the same, but if you didn’t know the basic game, you would hardly notice that the lobbies, corridors and outdoor areas are not taken directly from the film matrix. The complete package is presented to you in a cinematic showcase trailer, which is based on the second part of the series (Matrix Reloaded) both musically and in terms of content:
This is how you enter the Matrix
The installation is very simple: You throw the mod files with the extensions .pak and .sig into the mod folder of your Sifu directory and you are done. You will find this under: \Sifu\Content\Paks\~mods
For the download you need a free user account at (Nexusmods). The Matrix mod package consists of the following five downloads:
* (The Matrix) – Neo (makes you the chosen one)
* (Agent Smith to All Enemies) (replace all enemies with Agent Smith)
* (The Matrix Reshade) (paints the game in the typical green)
* (The Matrix Combat Sound Effects) (adds the combat sounds from the movies)
* (Matrix UI [by KangieDanie]) (changes font and colouring of the UI to match the rest)
By the way: The Matrix Awakens project released for the fourth movie was little more than an elaborate tech demo of the Unreal 5 engine at the end of 2021, but it demonstrated impressively where the open-world journey was headed in the future.
There were already interesting Matrix mods for Max Payne back then. Which ones do you remember most fondly and how much would you like to see a real new Matrix game? Tell us in the comments!
