New battle royale shooters are actually anything but trendy, but Off the Grid offers a few strong arguments. For example, the director of District 9.
The buzzword Battle Royale doesn’t really entice anyone behind the stove anymore in 2023. Fornite, Warzone and co. rule the market and we’ve seen too many failing upstarts to bat an eye at the prospect of the next supposedly big PUBG killer. But Off the Grid is definitely one of the more exciting projects – at least judging by the first trailers and just-released images.
Clear unique selling point: Off the Grid is supposed to have an extensive cyberpunk story, the devs talk about a 60-hour immersive narrative campaign that takes place within the 150-player matches. To make sure that the campaign turns out as thrilling as possible, the team has Neill Blomkamp on board, who has already ventured into science fiction with District 9, Chappie and especially Elysium with Matt Damon. You can get an impression here:
In Off the Grid you play a corporate soldier who takes part in a corpo war like in the world of Cyberpunk 2077, but on an island called Teardrop Island. In terms of gameplay, it’s not simply about shooting enemy corpos in the visor, but you have to extract loot like in Tarkov and also compete against AI enemies. Classic PvPvE. You extract items, use them to strengthen your equipment and swing into the next round to improve your own chances. Here are two of the new pictures, which also show gameplay:
Of course, we don’t know yet whether the whole thing will be fun in the end, there is hardly any tangible material about the game, even a release or beta date is still pending. Allegedly, the game is still planned for 2023 and will be released for PC, Xbox Series X and PS5. Of course, we will keep you up to date as soon as something happens here or there is an announcement of the first playtests.
