This week, Epic is giving away a game in which you fight for survival in the freezing cold and darkness
You can also pick up a free game from the Epic Games Store this week. This time, the latest game takes you to the other side of our solar system. Because this time you get the sci-fi shooterThe Callisto Protocol.
Before we go into the strengths of the game’s content, we would like to remind you that the promotion in the Epic Games Store is limited in time. You can get The Callisto Protocol for free until next Thursday, August 29 at 5 p.m.
What does The Callisto Protocol offer?
You take on the role of cargo ship pilot Jacob Lee and are stranded on Jupiter’s moon Callisto in the year 2320. Soon you will have to deal with mysterious mutated humans – the former inmates of the high-security Black Iron Prison.
The scenario alone promises pure goosebumps.A pitch-black environment, illuminated only now and then by menacing, cracking lightning bolts, and in the middle of it all, Jacob Lee, you, who is being hunted by mutants.
The Callisto Protocol is not a fully-fledged shooter, however. Your limited storage space and the literally astronomical prices for ammunition ensure that you only use your pistols, shotguns and assault rifles sparingly – which in turn increases the threat.
The game is the debut work of Striking Distance Studios. Part of the team: Glen Schofield, the main creator of the horror hit Dead Space. And for all those waiting for Dead Space 4, the latest free game from Epic should shorten the waiting time.
The game has its weaknesses, however, as we discovered in our test, because even if The Callisto Protocol looks very good: The game struggled with massive technical problems on PC at its release in 2022. Overall, the launch of the game was disastrous
Our verdict on the release was accordingly: “Visually impressive sci-fi trip with a lot of horror atmosphere, but also major design weaknesses.” We initially gave it a rating of 64, which was upgraded to a 74 almost seven weeks later.
