Titanfall 2 went through a rough patch due to issues with hacks and cheats – but thanks to hardworking fans, the game is more popular than it has been in a long time.
For a long time, things didn’t look good for the Titanfall franchise – after all, the titles, which are mainly played in multiplayer, suffered from partly massive hacker attacks right from the start. Even the developer Respawn itself announced that they had the situation on their radar, but that only one or two people were still working on measures against it:
But Titanfall 2 is currently experiencing something like a second spring, as a look at the player numbers at (Steam) shows. There, the shooter has more players than at any time since the summer of 2021. However, the reason for this is not to be found with the developers – but with hardworking fans.
Fan mod Northstar finally allows private servers
What happened? No patch, no big content update, no official news has lured players back into the mechs, but a fan mod called Northstar. This finally allows you to play matches on private servers.
Of course, this possibility does not mean that the gaps in the software, which serve as an attack surface for hackers, have been closed. Titanfall 2 still offers two fairly large entry points. Why is the problem nevertheless significantly mitigated by Northstar?
Because the big advantage of private servers is that you can control the field of participants – anyone who wants to cheat and sabotage the match must first know the server IP. But since the matches are not listed in the official list, this should be a very difficult task.
This mod could secure the future of the game: Because Northstar also allows you to use your own scripts and fan content, such as custom game modes, which are now increasingly being created. This new impetus for Titanfall 2 is also reflected in the player numbers of the past few days, which are going steeply upwards:
How to install Northstar on your system
If you’re now in the mood for a round of Titanfall 2 and want to try out the mod, we’ll give you a little installation help here so you can get into the action as quickly as possible:
* Download the latest version of the mod from the (official GitHub website).
- Extract the downloaded archive to get the folder custom server stuff.
- Move the contents of this folder to your Titanfall 2 installation directory. When Windows asks you if you want to overwrite/replace existing files, you can confirm with a clear conscience that you want to do so.
- Start the NorthstarLauncher.exe – don’t be surprised, because of the way the mod works, your Windows Defender might ask you if you really want to run the file.
- Now Titanfall 2 will start normally, but in the main menu you will now find the new Launch Northstar button next to the Multiplayer item. You can then configure your match as you wish.
- By the way, the hacking problem became so big that fans started a protest – in the form of a hacking attack.
