Tomb Raider fans were already enjoying locking poor Winston up 26 years ago. Now they’re being rewarded for it too
Does poor Winston never get a break? The Crofts’ faithful butler already had to deal with the fact that many, many players took great pleasure in locking the poor guy in the cold room 26 years ago. Now, together with Lara, he dutifully returns to his duties in the Remaster Trilogy only to be fooled again.

Achievement for frozen butler
In terms of content, the remaster of the first three Lara Croft adventures offers hardly any modern innovations, but rather a few nice extras. For example, there is now a photo mode and slightly more intuitive controls. But the developers have also allowed themselves a little joke, and the traditional freezing of the butler in Tomb Raider 2 has been optimized twice
In the past, it wasn’t intentional that Lara could lure her butler into the estate’s cold room only to lock him inside. The resourceful players found this out for themselves. Now it is clear that we are encouraged to do so. For two reasons:
- There’s an Achievement! Whoever captures the butler in the cold room will receive one of the 269 new Achievements. It’s called Crime and Judgment.
- The butler freezes! In addition, the butler now reacts to this misdeed. When you open the cold room again shortly afterwards and look inside, poor Winston has frozen into an ice statue.
Since there is now an achievement for freezing Winston, it is also easy to see how many people actually carry out this misdeed. On Steam, for example, five percent of all players have bagged the achievement so far It is not known exactly how many people own the game. However, it is estimated that between 50,000 and 100,000 units have been sold
The new trilogy, which was released on February 14, 2024, has been very well received on Steam so far. In our test, we were a little more critical of the game. On the one hand, the remaster delivers exactly what it promises, but no longer feels contemporary by modern standards. However, if you want to reminisce, the remaster is just what you need. Or, if you just want to freeze Winston again.
