With role-playing, survival and base building, Tribes of Midgard pushes the right buttons for many players. However, the numerous buyers also have a lot of criticism.

On Tuesday, Tribes of Midgard, an exciting genre mix, was released on Steam: Similar to Valheim, here you are on the move as a Viking in an open world, mining resources, manufacturing new equipment, expanding your base and defending it from nightly attacks.

But despite an extremely successful release in terms of numbers, players are currently dissatisfied.

Many players and many problems

The game has become an instant success on Steam: Over 26,000 players were simultaneously on the move in the Viking worlds at the time of release – numbers that any other indie title would be happy about.

However, the Steam reviews are currently quite mixed: Of more than 1,880 user reviews, only 63 per cent are positive. But what are people bothered about?

On its Steam shop page and in the trailers, Tribes of Midgard was clearly advertised as an action role-playing game with survival elements. However, at its core, the game is more of a mix of tower defence and roguelike, where the goal is to survive waves of nighttime attacks. A comparable game is the original Fortnite, before it became the current Battle Royale. But feel free to watch the trailer again here and make up your own mind:

Bad balancing

Tribes of Midgard apparently has major balancing problems. It is said to be extremely difficult, especially for solo players who are quickly pressed for time and can hardly keep up with collecting and crafting.

But there are also problems in ten-player co-op: if you play together with up to nine random players, resources are not shared. Therefore, it is possible that one player collects a significant share of the resources and then does not use them optimally.

Even worse, he can also leave the game and the resources are simply gone. With about two hours of game time per round, this is not at all unlikely. Since good communication is important here, Tribes of Midgard is currently the most fun when you play with friends.

Weak battles

In Tribes of Midgard, you not only build watchtowers and protective walls, but also take up arms yourself. However, this is not really supposed to be fun. The combat system is probably too simple for many players and blocking and dodging are said to not really work well due to animation delays.
