From Captain Laserhawk: You probably haven’t heard of The Game yet. Ubisoft’s new top-down shooter has been released on the quiet. There are reasons for this.
Usually, it’s a pretty big deal when a new game from Ubisoft comes out. After all, the company is known for great series like Assassin’s Creed, Anno, and Rayman. But you almost never hear about a current game release.
Ubisoft has secretly released a game for the Netflix series Captain Laserhawk: A Blooddragon Remix The series itself is a spin-off of Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, in which other Ubisoft characters also appear, such as Rayman, who appears as a news anchor. The game is now called Captain Laserhawk: The Game and it seems more like an experiment than a sure-fire success.
A crypto shooter with NFTs and Rayman
Games journalist Stephen Totilo has ventured into this gem and quickly found out why Ubisoft would rather sweep the title under the rug. The Laserhawk shooter is a Web3 game, so works with technologies like blockchains and NFTs.
This isn’t the first time Ubisoft has dipped a toe into the murky world of crypto gaming. Back in 2021, the game maker introduced playable NFTs in the form of “Ubisoft Quartz,” drawing a fair amount of criticism for doing so. Ubisoft also kept the blockchain game Champions Tactics, which was released last year, under the radar.
Captain Laserhawk: The Game doesn’t make a particularly impressive appearance either. As Totilo reports, it’s an extremely simple top-down shooter with a futuristic neon look.
On the official website it was still advertised that the community could help shape the narrative. According to Totilo, however, there was still nothing of this to be seen in the game. So far, the development of Captain Laserhawk has apparently focused more on the Web3 ecosystem than on gameplay.
To play, you also need an NFT, which you could still get for free from Ubisoft at the beginning of December According to Totilo, you now have to buy such a “virtual ID card” on the marketplace. He paid just under $26 for it.
Those who do throw themselves into the fray anyway are greeted by a kind of battle pass, among other things. With this, you can unlock virtual rewards that can be converted into NFTs. Skins are also available, but only while stocks last, of course. Basically, the Web3 project works primarily to create rare virtual items that users trade.

One of these items is a “legendary” Rayman profile picture that you can attach to your ID NFT. Of course, this item is also limited. The former platforming hero acts as an announcer for deathmatches in the game and can at least be controlled in a mini-game. But is it worth getting a crypto wallet just for that?
