The development of a big Extraction shooter in the Far Cry universe has reportedly been started from scratch.
According to consistent media reports, Ubisoft had been developing a multiplayer shooter in the world of Far Cry for several years.
Actually, this game, known only as “Project Maverick,” was supposed to be released as a multiplayer addition to parallel to Far Cry 7
In 2023, it became a standalone title after all, but now the project apparently has to start from scratch.
What it would have been: ice, wilderness, PvP
As the usually very well-informed Tom Henderson reports on the website Insider Gaming, citing several unspecified sources close to Ubisoft, , the Far Cry shooter “Maverick” is now back to square one.
The multiplayer title would have been set in Alaska and would have thrown players into a frosty open world – where the hostile climate, wild animals and other players would have ensured a bitter fight for survival.
This is now off the cards.
Except for a core team of a few people, all developers are said to have been pulled from Maverick, reports Insider Gaming.
The game is going back to the drawing board: Ubisoft is reportedly starting again with the prototype phase.
Reinforcement for Far Cry 7
The end of the project was apparent from the outset, according to sources from Insider Gaming. Months before the announcement, Ubisoft had already moved Maverick’s tech team to Far Cry 7.
And this will be different than usual: in 2023, the first leaks about the setting and location of the sequel emerged.
Now numerous other developers are also said to have switched: Ubisoft employees in Montreal, Berlin and other studios are now helping with Far Cry 7 instead of supervising the Extraction spinoff.
So it is quite conceivable that the single-player successor could benefit from the new manpower due to the temporary end of the Extraction project.
Promising playtests of Far Cry 7 are said to have already taken place – according to some of Henderson’s sources, the new game is great and a refreshing departure from its formulaic predecessors.
Whether the internally targeted release of Far Cry 7 in 2026 will work out remains to be seen. An official announcement from Ubisoft is still pending.
