The next big update for the survival hit Valheim has been in the works for quite some time. But soon, to the delight of fans, “Hearth & Home” is finally set to be released. To shorten the waiting time until the release, the developers present some of the new features and changes in the form of short videos.

The latest trailer highlights a small but very important change to the combat system. Because if you want to block or parry nasty blows from your opponents in the future, you should think carefully about what meal you eat beforehand.

This changes to Valheim’s combat system

Maximum life energy becomes important factor

The changes to blocking and parrying result from Hearth & Home’s new food system. Previously, eating many foods gave you back both stamina and life energy. With the new update, however, you will only receive life or stamina – with a few exceptions.

This also affects combat: In order for the changes to stamina and life energy to really affect gameplay, the developers have also refined the combat system. This means that you should first think about what delicacy you are going to eat before the fight.

Stamina will still be the decisive factor in how fast you can strike and how much damage you cause with your hits. However, how effectively you can block will be determined by your maximum life energy in the future.

So if you’re thinking about blocking a whole horde of enemies with your shield, you should eat something that replenishes your life energy to the maximum beforehand.

And what about parrying? Parrying is not explicitly mentioned, but since it is basically a blocking process as well, you can assume that your life energy counts for this as well.

By the way, a new bar will appear next to your character in battle. This fills up when you are hit by an enemy and signals when you are staggering. Nothing earth-shattering, but still a nice addition.
