The board game Combat Arena gets a new variant with Lair of the Beast, which will be released in Germany in July.

Games Workshop introduces a new board game that doesn’t overly strain the wallet despite well-known miniatures. In Warhammer 40K – Combat Arena: Lair of the Beast two to four players not only compete against each other, but also against a boss monster. Quasi Hunt Showdown, but on the coffee table and 40,100 years later.

The board game will still be released in July 2023, an exact date was not given. In Germany, Lair of the Beast will be available at Thalia, Müller, Elbenwald and GameStop.

Games Workshop did not name a price, but we reckon with 30 to 60 euros, measured by the scope. The predecessor Combat Arena: Battle of Champions costs 30 euros. Peanuts compared to the Tabtletop original, for which you can quickly spend many hundreds of Euros.

What is Lair of the Beast about?

The basic gameplay of Combat Arena remains largely the same. Two to four players and female players battle it out on a compact hex game board in the roles of Space Marine Sergeant Vennaro, the strange robot UR-025 and Co.

In total, there are ten characters along with the familiar miniatures to choose from, six more than in Combat Arena. Cards and dice are used for combat. The aim is to use attacks and special abilities tactically in order to win a round that lasts about 20 minutes.

New is the fact that in the middle of the arena a big Ambull swings its claws. So not only do you have to watch out for the opponents, but you also have to face a dangerous beast. Video gamers would call it PvPvE, as Hunt Showdown and Escape from Tarkov offer it.
